New 7D Mark II Exposure Level Indicator Bug?

Ok, I have had my new 7D Mark II for two days now and so far I'm loving it. However, I just discovered a possible bug. If this is a designed feature, I'm not sure I understand it.

When I put my 7DM2 in Manual Mode and select any ISO other than Auto, the exposure level indicator disappears - both on the LCD panel and in the view finder. My 7D does not do this.

Does anyone else see this behavior in your new 7D Mark II? If so, then I suggest this is a bug that I hope can be fixed with a Firmware update. Or is it just my camera?

Basil

To all you new 7D Mk2 owners - are you seeing the above issue or is it just my copy?

I am so new to this level camera I don't know if I'm going to be any help. Been trying to learn this camera for two days. The only thing that I noticed is that when you click the WB, Drive, Iso buttons at the top of the top screen it goes 'blank' and only shows the highlighted feature (Of the button choice) when you rotate the wheel to choose your setting. Does this even come close to the problem you are noticing?

Yes, the one on the right side is still there, but the one on the bottom of the view finder and on the bottom of the LCD screen both disappear in Manual Mode with any ISO setting other than AUTO. My 7D does not exhibit this behavior. I'm wondering if any other new 7DMII owners are seeing the same behavior or is it just my copy?

Check out the tutorial videos at canon digital learning center. Utilize the functions in the intelligent view finder on the 7d ll. You might find the answer here .

Mine does it too. It is on the right side of the viewfinder. It is useable but less visible. I do hope they correct it with a software update. If one needed an exposure indicator it would certainly be in manual mode. All other modes have it in the traditional location. Consistency is important.

And as I said, my 7D doesn't behave this way. On the 7D the exposure indicator remains in Manual Mode regardless of ISO setting.

The online Canon learning center explains all this and much more. There are video files by Rudy Winston to explain almost everything about the 7D2 camera. You can get your questions answered without having to read a thing.

This is not a bug... it's by design. It is the same in Canon 1D series cameras and is actually a better arrangement, so there's nothing to "correct", once you understand and get accustomed to it.

In the auto exposure modes (Av, Tv, P), the scale at the bottom of the viewfinder shows Exposure Compensation. It is not a light meter readout.

In M mode, there's no such thing as Exposure Compensation, so in 7D2 that scale turns off and the metering scale on the righthand side of the viewfinder becomes your reference.

They serve two different purposes, so separating them this way immediately tells you which mode you're using. It's actually better than the way "lesser" cameras share a single display for both AE/Exposure Compensation and M/Metering Scale functions. A lot of people confuse the two and have a difficult time grasping the difference, because of this dual purpose arrangement on the lesser models.

It's just different. Once you are used to it, I think you'll like it.

Likely one reason for this new arrangement is Auto ISO in Manual mode... which now has Exposure Compensation possible (previous models didn't allow EC on Auto ISO, which made it far less useful... Auto ISO/M is actually just another auto exposure mode, after all... and EC is a necessary tool to use with any AE mode).

I called Canon about this. They have received numerous calls about it. They assured me that they will be coming out with a firmware update to correct this issue. I encourage all Canon 7D Mark ii owners to contact canon tech support to let them know important it is for them to correct with quickly. For action photography when you are frequently changing settings on the fly this issue materially reduces the effectiveness of what otherwise is a really terrific camera. I shoot in manual with manual iso all the time and the absence of the typical horizontal exposure meter really slows me down. Their tech support number us 1 800 828 4040. They told me with the firmware update users will be able to pick whether to keep the vertical exposure meter or the horizontal one. I have a hard time seeing the vertical meter. It takes my vision away for the subject and it is very faint. I greatly prefer the horizontal meter.

Alan, the 1Dx does allow EC in manual mode IF firmware update 2.2 is installed and ISO is set to auto. The scale in the viewfinder is only on the right hand side. This is true In all modes.

I called Canon about this today, too. I hope you are right, Tony, I can barely see that vertical meter on the right side. It's faint, and because I wear glasses I don't get my eye as close as I am sure Canon intended to the eyecup. I am absurdly disappointed by this change from what I'm used to from my 7D. Still a lot to learn about this new beastie.

Please, when you call them ask why on earth they did not add wifi to that camera.

It looks to me that they like to hold some desired feature back for the next XD.xxx model.

Like
7dmii no wifi
5DMiii no wifi, no GPS, no on board flash
70D no GPS
SX 60 no gps

I am in the market for an sx 60 and 1 of the 3 above but I will not buy another Canon until they include wifi, gps and preferable on board flash.

never before have I considered another brand but this blatant marketing puts me on hold and looking.

Actually, android will some day be used in cameras with many independent app writers to correct manufacturers screw-ups and make customer customizations available.

Is that asking to much?
