The "Color Runs" are running events like marathons and half marathons where spectators throw balloon like objects filled with colored chalk at the participants and each other along the course. This chalk can get into and ruin photographers lenses, bodies and equipment to the point where it can not be cleaned out.
Most of the professional event photographers and most of the lens/camera renters are refusing to allow their equipment at or near any of these events. This has caused the event producers to make wild pleas for photographers.. Everyone needs to be wary of this because the event producers will not pay for your repairs, the insurance companies are refusing to cover equipment at these events and leaving amateurs and start-up professional photographers taking the jobs, not realizing that their equipment will be ruined.

Put the camera in underwater case. Problem solved.
Never knew and thanks for the "Heads-up" warning!!!
Agree in spades. Just a ridiculous and dangerous event. I'll never go back.
I had read about this issue after being asked to photograph a photo-op for a color event. I used my telephoto lens to stay far enough away, but close enough to get as much impact of the color as all the participants threw the dye into the air. Later that evening, I found red dye on the outside of my lens and camera body. My 3 week old Nikon has a permanent "scar" from the event. No other damage was done, fortunately! No more color events for me.

Just use an all weather camera like the drop proof, waterproof, freezeproof cameras.
I have a Fuji XP30 and it does a great job under water so no problem with a bit of flour!
I wonder what those folks' lungs look like after inhaling all that color dust
Covered one after receiving a freelance "race event" assignment. Will never do it again. In addition to camera cleaning my Think Tank system and rain gear all suffered. Hate to think of inhaling all that colored powder especially breathing hard while on the run.

Flour would be fine. this is granulated dye. I wouldn't use any camera that I cant afford to throw away when done.

They still make disposable 35mm cameras.
Don't know what to do about that stuff in your lungs.

And its not just what drifts into your gear. Unfortunately, too many people, both participants and volunteers, thinks it's funny to throw hands full of the dye directly at runners, bystanders--both adults and children--and photographers. Just a disaster.
Hopefully if no one visually promotes by taking pictures of them, these -- idiotic, like most new fads these days -- "Color Events" they'll just die away like Pet Rocks.
Glad to get the warning though!

Thank you for this information. Greatly appreciated.
I rarely have that problem since I avoid anyplace where girls are scantily dressed since I usually wind up bringing one home and my wife threatens to kick me out AGAIN❗️
And one of these days she may actually be serious. 😱
So, no color runs for me.
