I notice that the 18-135 is a lot cheaper than the 18-85 and wonder if it is an inferior lens. Anyone got either of these and what do you think?

Where are you seeing an 18-85? Are you thinking perhaps of the 17-85?

There is one extra element in the 17-85 lens, and since it's a smaller zoom range, it may be a bit more precise. It also has the Ultrasonic (USM) focusing motor, which is more precise and allows for manual focus adjustment without switching from AF to MF on the lens barrel.

I have the 18-135 and it's not a bad lens. Not top shelf, but not bad.

Agree with JimH. I have the 18-135mm as a kit lens and just did a lens test this past weekend between the 18-135mm, my 100mm L macro and a friends 70-200mm L. The 18-135 was not as sharp as the L lenses, but it wasn't bad either. Plus, the zoom helps fill a larger 'bill' than the other two. Do I wish it had a longer range, like 18-400 - you bet. But would I throw it away because of its quality....no way.
