Pearl Harbor Dec 7th, 1941 Survivor from battleship USS Pennsylvania BB-39 Everret Hyland age 92. We recently visited Hawaii and visited Pearl Harbor. It was a very emotional visit to the USS Arizona BB-39 Memorial and when we returned Everett was sitting outside one of the buildings. He had a book that documented Pearl Harbor events and had his picture which he signed by using a Signature Stamp as his hands were crippled up. Nikon D800 24mm F6.3 ISO250 Time 1650

The Flag Still Waves. This living memorial to the firemen, police and civilians is meant to honor those that made the ultimate sacrifice as well as those that survived the tragedy of 9/11. Every year, the volunteer firemen stand watch in Ferndale, Montana (NW Montana in the Rocky Mountains, near Glacier National Park. Pop 284.) . On two hour shifts, for twenty four hours, these volunteers remind us of that terrible event and the heros that are part of the American Spirit. Olympus Z560 f. 22 1/500.

An interview with MontanaTrace,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I started taking pix in high school. My dad worked in media.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
Self taught. Lots of trial and even more error.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
Bright colors or unique B&W scenes.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
The sun was right, the scene was heartfelt. Olympus Z560.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I use iPhoto on my Mac to boost color saturation.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
Everyone's photos influence me.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
I would change the angle to include more of the fire hall.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
I wish I had taken some photography classes. There's so much I could have learned from someone that knew what they were doing.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
iPhoto.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
I love the compacts because the one lens is everything. I'm considering buying the New Canon SX60. It packs a 21- 1355mm 65X.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
With the hot shoe on the SX60, I'll be buying a speed light and slave.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I am a real estate agent that shoots properties for myself and other agents. If there was enough money in it, I'd give up the real estate and just shoot properties.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
Digital has ruined all my darkroom jokes.

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
Mostly local newspapers and the Whitefish Chamber of Commerce. (Montana)

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Shoot too many.

An interview with YPhotoGuy,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
Really one+ year after retiring. Father had always taken pictures/movies, Mother had worked 'coloring' photos (1930s).

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No formal training. Just joined Peoria Camera Club and learning from people the club has present on topics.

Trying all kinds of photography to see what I like - landscape, people, action, macro. So far mostly landscapes.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
How it tells a story to you... just how it hits you.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
Nikon D800, 24mm. Asked Everret if it would be okay for me to get close up picture of him. He said fine, so took several pictures at different angles.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
Yes. Shoot in RAW and use Nikon's ViewNX2 to adjust as desired. This one only needed a little cropping and darking of background.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
After visiting the USS Arizona Memorial, it was very special to see & talk to a survivor like Everret. I am Navy Vet from Vietnam era and meeting a Navy hero just had to be documented with pictures.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
Might try 85mm or 1235mm lense. Try to get better background.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
Always back up photos as soon as possible, minimum of every day...

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
Don't have any yet, just starting...

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
Nikon AF-S 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VR FX. Good range with good speed... and not too pricy.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
Not there yet...

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Participate in learning classes, study groups, trips.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
I found it interesting that US National Park Service and USS Arizona allow surviving sailors to be 'buried' in the battleship. There are now only nine survivors from the USS Arizona still alive. They can chose to be cremated and their urn placed by divers into the sunk battleship.

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
No

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
As we approach veterans day Nov 11th, I would like to thank everyone for remembering our WW II & other veterans.

An interview with fjrwillie,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I started in the 1970’s mainly taking photos of road racing that lasted about 3 years. In 2005 I bought a motorcycle and was challenged to find the most diners in New England. I bought a Coolpix P&S. This really got me started in taking pictures. Went thru a couple of P&S’s. In 2005 also started a blog of my motorcycle journeys including photos. In 2012 I bought a Nikon D5100 for taking pictures of our last National Park Tour. It was on this purchase that I started to take photography a bit more seriously.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No formal training. Most of my photos are related to motorcycle journeys and tours that I do. I also gravitate to building on the National Register of Historic Places. I enjoy taking pictures of buildings since they cooperate a lot more than people. They don’t move.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
Composition, mood and a story. Great post processing as well.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
No special equipment, don’t even own a flash for the camera. Use a tripod and monopod when I am trying to take a special picture.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
99% of my photos are 3 bracketed photos and process thru Photomatix Pro. From there I process in Paint Shop Pro adding some clarity, vibrancy and sharpening.
For those special photos when it is not a documentation event, I do quite a bit of post processing to bring out the best in the photo. At least I try. Have a lot to learn in this area as well.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
I really enjoy HDR photos of landscapes and man-made objects, buildings, cityscapes at night, bridges, scenic landscapes. I follow a couple of blogs of HDR photographers.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
My skills are still evolving, it is a continual self-education. UHH has been an invaluable resource for this education. I am tempted to take some classes, however I may wait until I retire, which is not that far off.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
How to manually control exposure.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
DslrDashboard which controls the camera settings via my Android phone for bracketing.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
Since I take a lot of pictures of buildings my goto lens is a Tokina 11-16mm. On the road with the bike I am using the kit lens 18-55mm. For people I used a 35mm prime.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
None

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Poker tournaments, this assumes that I can't travel on the bike or car.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
We have been all over the US on the bike, including being taken out by a deer in Montana. That certainly was interesting. That happened in September, totaled the bike and bought another one in November. The hit was the 4th day of our 17 day journey. The following year we went right past the same spot and not a deer to be seen. 4th day into that trip, in Yellowstone, a Bison (apparently in heat) headed right for us and got within 8 feet of us. Said thru the intercom, not again. The Bison turned away for some reason. We were jammed between 2 cars taking pictures of the Bison. I wish I had my D5100 for that trip.

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
At the bottom of my posts are 2 links, one for a Flickr link and the other to my blog.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
I am still seeking advance about photography. If I can offer one piece of advice if there is that special place you have always wanted to go, just go. If you keep putting it off, you will one day say I sure wish I had gone to ….. Time has a way of creeping up on you real fast.
