Maxwell Wildlife Preserve near McPherson, Kansas. Approximately 2800 acres of pristine land takes you back to earlier times (if you don't see the fence). A few came close to check me out.

Nice photo's Frank.

Here near Denver, Colorado we have the Rocky Mountain Arsenal wildlife refuge which sits on 1,000's of acres. They have a large herd of Buffalo, whitetail and mule deer, coyote and so much other wildlife. I love going there in the winter to photograph the Bison in the snow. Lori.

Thanks for the info. The next time I go to Colorado Springs I will take a day to go visit the RM Arsenal W.R.

If you wish to see buffalo in the wild, take a drive up the Alaska Highway (Alcan, to our U.S. neighbours)There's a couple of herds of several hundred in Northern B.C. and the Yukon just roaming around and are often close to, across and on the road.

It is a rather small area for Buffalo/Bison, but for Kansas it is "well done" considering how much land in our State is planted in wheat, corn, milo and other food crops. The Bison herd at the Maxwell Refuge numbers about 250 and there are about 50 Elk

I would like to see the area you are referring to. My wife and I visited Alaska in June. That State is really, really big!
B.C. and the Yukon must be the same.

Thank you Linda. I had some little white spots in my pictures but I think it is dry grass debris collecting on the Bison. It was 80 degrees F, dry and a variable wind from the south at 15 t0 25 mph.

Amazing to see also how the prairie regenerates in these places - lots of variety of grasses and wildflowers (normally called "weeds" ).

Some of the grass is Big Bluestem grass which grows 7 to 9 feet tall and little Bluestem grass that grows 4 to 8 feet tall (if not grazed by cattle, bison, etc.) Little Bluestem grass has roots that go 5 to 7 feet deep. Bluestem grass is quite nutritious for cattle and bison. Then there is a variety of Buffalo grasses that thrive in areas of low rainfall. And, of course, weeds. However, the land is managed carefully to prevent over grazing which kills out
the important grasses. Over grazing allows the weeds to take over and really ruins good pasture land. The Flint Hills of Kansas extend from Oklahoma to Nebraska, about 70 to 100 miles wide and the grass there is mostly Bluestem grass (so I have been told). Large herds of cattle graze there most of the summer. Beautiful Flint Hills scenery except when it is subject to controlled burn off before the new grass sprouts. The burn off is quite interesting to watch, especially at night
