A crazy Valentine story

Not that I think this will interest anyone, but it is a bit unusual and I'm gonna post it anyway. Not sure how many people have this to happen.

In June 1993, I went to Walmart to find a birthday card with a horse on it for a "horsey" friend. (Horse lovers don't care for cards with flowers on them.)
There were NONE, so I said, HAY, (horsey talk) I can just paint my own cards, after all I am an equine artist!
I decided to make Christmas cards with horses on them too, and put them on a website to sell them.
I asked a friend if I could put her horse, "Got Rox Wolfman" on one of my new cards. She seemed flattered and said yes.
I gave her a couple of packs of the cards for letting me use her horse on them.
On Valentine's Day 1994, I got a call from our Mayor (she also owns a local florist and I have known her for 40 years). She asked me if Joe (hubby) had a new nickname. I told her NO, not that I knew about. She said "well, who the 'L' is Wolfie?"
It didn't hit me right away, but by the time she came to deliver the red roses, I realized that the only WOLFIE I knew was a HORSE! I told her that when she got here and she said "well, yeah, OK".
I looked at the card and it said "Love always...your favorite stud, Wolfie"
WHEW!!!! In just minutes, I figured the whole town had heard of Wolfie!
I went by the florist and took the monthly horse magazine and the card I had painted and showed her Wolfie's ad in the mag and the card printed with the painting on it. I think she was convinced, but..........
Jumping to next year, 1995, same deal, different florist. My friend, Sis, Wolfie's owner gets new cards made with him on them every year. She makes sure she gets around to all the local florists and always adds the same message. She gets a big hoot out of this and says it will only stop when I stop creating a new Wolfie card each year.
I got my red roses this morning.
Here are pictures of 2 of the "Wolfie cards"

I have told this story every year for the past two and a half decades. It is a Valentine's Day story that is worth telling especially to those who find themselves single on the fourteenth of February, for they do not know how lucky they are. This story is not for the faint of heart. It will incite some emotion so stand warned. Also, please understand that I had no part in this story other than that of an observer to the events. I certify that all of the events in this story are true. Out of respect for the privacy of those involved, I have changed their names.
Sometime in the late 1980's I was living with my then partner Todd. He had a niece named Mindy who was only about ten years younger than I was. Mindy was a bright girl with pretty eyes and nice smile. She was overweight but only moderately. Full-figured is an apt description. She and I got along fairly well and we always had a good time talking and joking.
As was the custom, Todd's company was having their annual employee summer picnic at a local park. It was a catered picnic and any relatives could attend. He invited Mindy and I to the picnic and the three of us set off for a day of fun and games in under the August California sun.
While we were eating, one of Todd's younger co-workers, Gerald came over to introduce himself. He was one of those people that could never keep still, there was always something twitching on him all the time, and he stood by our table rocking nervously from one foot to the other. He and Mindy seemed to hit it off and after a while, he asked for her phone number, and then trotted off.
A few days passed and we heard from Mindy, Gerald phoned a couple of times and finally asked her out. The buzz around my partner's office was very positive and Gerald was talking up this potential new girlfriend.
The dating began in earnest over the Labor Day weekend and, by the time, Halloween rolled around; they were officially an item, splitting their time equally between their two apartments.
Their relationship grew through the holiday season, families were introduced, gifts exchanged and everyone said it was good match. Over the next year, they were inseparable. They vacationed together and lived together albeit in two separate apartments. Mindy began a serious fitness program that seemed to be working. She was in much better shape getting much slimmer and in love at the same time.
The months passed and at the company Christmas party Gerald was asking some of the guys about diamonds and of course word got back to Mindy. Gerald was in line for a promotion after the first of the year so Mindy's anticipation was beginning to build however; Christmas came and went without diamonds for Mindy.
The third week of January, the office was once again buzzing with news that Gerald had purchased a diamond ring. His promotion had come through and with it a transfer out of state. He had to travel to the new office and would be gone for a couple of weeks. A few days before Valentine's Day he called Mindy to tell her he would be back in town in time for Valentine's Day, Saturday and wanted to be sure she would be home in the morning.
Well, Mindy was beaming; she was the happiest, most excited girl in the world. She had lost an astonishing 40 pounds and looked great. On Friday, the night before the "Big Day" we spent time together making plans and discussing the future. I had previously moved across the country and was giving her some pointers on packing for a move.
That Valentine's Day morning was bright and crisp in Los Angeles. There was no smog so the mountains are sharp and clear along the horizon. It was day you would want to remember.
Around, one in the afternoon, we get the call. Mindy's mom, Kristen, my partner's older sister is highly excited and wants us to come over to Mindy's right away. It is a ten-minute ride. Upon entering the gate, we hear unusually loud voices. Once in the door we are shocked by what we find. Mindy is sitting on the floor her back leaning on the sofa. She is surrounded by open cartons of ice cream and chocolate candy wrappers. Her face looks like a Dali painting with running make-up and smears of ice cream and candy, she is sobbing uncontrollably, shouting only epitaphs regarding Gerald. We approach her slowly but we are repelled by screams and thrown objects. Kristen is cowering in the kitchen she calls to us.
Once we are safely in the kitchen, Kristen tells us that Mindy called her stating, "Mom please comes quickly, and I need you!" She continues telling us that by the time she had gotten to Mindy's, she was "So far gone in a Chocolate-sugar haze" that she could not get near her. We tried to reason with Mindy but she only screamed loudly when we attempted to wrestle away the ice cream. It took several hours and a couple of glasses of wine to get Mindy to the point where she was calm and lucid.
She tells us that Gerald and his brother arrived around 10:30 in the morning. They were there to collect Gerald's things, as Gerald was moving. He had become engaged to another girl and he chose that day to break the news. He met this girl a few months back. We found out later that this girl had pretty eyes a nice smile and outweighed Mindy by at least 60 pounds.
Mindy had become the woman she wanted to be, only to find out that Gerald wanted the woman she once was. Several years later, Mindy met her true love, married and together they have a wonderful home and beautiful children.

Here is my favorite Valentine story...When I was young and single, my cousin and I went on a girl's nite out. We stopped for something to eat and started talking to two young fellows sitting nearby. My dog had just had puppies and one of the fellows was interested in obtaining one. We made an appointment for him to stop by the house. Now the fellow interested in the puppy was nice enough but it was his retiring friend that interested me and he came along. The new puppy owner invited me to a party the following nite and having nothing better to do, I accepted. When he came to pick me up, his friend was again with him. I wasn't interested in anything but a friendship with the more aggressive one and throughout the Summer, the process was repeated..the friend was always with him. Came September, I was enrolled in college and found that the friend was attending the same school and we began traveling to and from school together. Other than friendly banter, he showed no personal interest in me which I admit was getting to me....and then came February and Valentine's Day! I was surprised to see a card in the mailbox because I wasn't dating anyone at the time but there it was. The card wasn't anything special but I've never forgotten the simple verse in more than fifty years.

Roses are red
Violets are blue
Date trees have dates
And I'd like one with you.

We dated for a few months but the interest of both parties fizzled out. A year or so ago, in telling this story online, I mentioned his name and someone said that he had an old friend by that name. He sent me a picture and sure enough it was the same person.

The moral of my story is to send out that Valentine's card, you may make someone's day and be remembered a lifetime.

S-man, thank you for the kind words. I'm glad you like my paintings. Sadly, I find that my artistic ability doesn't seem to help my photography at all. Oh how I wish it did. I just don't seem to have the talent for it. I try so hard, but it's not happening. I have a ownderful coach and still fail miserably.
Wanna come to my pity party???

What a let-down for her, but I'm glad Mindy finally found love.
