Art Wolfe on Finding the Subject

I think so many landscape photographers including myself go out to capture the grand landscape. So often we end up with photos full of messy distracting elements, and we don't really zero in on the thing that drew our eye and made us take out the camera in the first place.

Possibly we have come upon a landscape that has many attractive features as the one I am posting, but sometimes because of angle, or light, it's just not possible to get all those great elements in and end up with a stunning, creative photograph. This is a series of three shots put up by Art Wolfe on creative live.

In the first one he has three great elements. The trees, the blue pool, and those awesome clouds. But he's got an ugly carpark in the background and the pool gets lost behind the trees. The third shot is what he comes up with after a series of shots.

He says that most of the time, when he comes upon a scene like this he takes several shots, weeding out the distracting elements. Sometimes that grand landscape shot is there, but when it's not here's how to be creative.

This class is on sale for $49.99 right now, and it's worth every penny if you are looking to taking your landscape photography to a new creative level.

Very interesting. Thanks for the post.
I guess sometimes we just can't see the forest
for the trees. I need to learn this for sure.

We all need to remember to ask ourselves what it is that really caught our eye. It's a hard thing to narrow down sometimes. I think it takes years and years of practice.
