dropped by the camera store today for a remote release but the salesman was busy so i spent a few minutes petting the purty $1000 tripods an laughing at how my 50 year old aluminum $20 tripod was just as good.
Well the truth is mine has become a little loose and the old pan head lets my heavy lenses flop around a bit so when i saw this baby leaning all forlorn in the corner i checked it out and brought it home.
5 feet tall, rigid, fluid head. quick plate mounting, 17 lb load, balance rail, everything the others had and only $130.
No carbon fibre, just 22 pounds of rigid support.
If weight isn't an issue but money is, check out the SunPack Videopro-M3
Good find! I've looked at video tripods, which are generally heavier and more fluid, but most I've seen need considerable conversion to mount a DSLR.

even comes wit a heavy duty bag.
Plenty of clearance to mount/dismount camera body without removing lens.
Dolly wheels available and those 3" hinges on the triangulated legs are really rigid.
Good find. Smart buy. So Many other tripods are outrageously over priced.

Just found out it even has a bubble level and ball mount on the head so you can level it for those panoramic shots.
This rig is underpriced.
Thanks for the post and info. My aging Bogen 3021 from the mid 80's is getting a bit worn also. Used it from anything from a medium format to 35mm film and now digital. It sat in the back of a lot of churches for weddings, and also used it in my studio for portraits. I can't complain though because it has served me well, and never dropped a lens or camera. But, I think I will definitely look at the Sunpak, especially for the money, since it will spend a considerable time in my car trunk. This is why I like this site and check it out first thing every morning.
Could you post a pic showing the 'balance rail?'
Thanks

the built in balance rail uses a rack and pinion to move the quick mount plate 2 inches front to back and locks in position.
Its perfect for balancing a long telephoto but not to be confused with a focus rail.
