First of all, I love UHH. Have been reading all posts for months and have learned so much. I have a Canon 7D and will be going to NYC on vacation in March. I have around 900. to spend on a new lens. I have a 18-55 kit lens that has to go. My other lens won't work, they are 100-400, 100 mm Macro and a 75-300 that I do not like. So, I want a tack sharp walk around lens. Any suggestions?

Not a Canon shooter, but the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM may suit your needs. I have a Nikkor 16-85mm VR which retailed for $650 or so; Canon has a similar zoom17-85. Really depends on the type of photography you do. Good luck.

Canon makes a 17-85 usm that I've been told is a great walk around lens. I just bought one for a trip to Europe, but I have not used it yet. Reports on this lens are very good. Let's see.

Why does your 100-400 not work with your 7D?

I'm going to second the motion for the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM.

It's a good range, and the f/stop is great. I know it doesn't SEEM like 2.8 to 4.0 is a big deal but in my experience, it is.

I sold all of my 3.5 and 4.0 lenses and bought all 2.8 and below lenses.

And it's right there at the top of your price range.

the 75-300 is an old lens but it didn't get that bad a review, what don't you like about it and would you be willing to sell it

I'll third that idea. I use this lens for 95+% of my photography. It's supposedly built to "L" standards, is not overly heavy, and is very sharp at all settings. It's a perfect "walking around", vacation lens.

Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 if it was me......the 85mm will give you more reach, and the lens is about $300 less than the f/2.8. Have a great trip!

If you can swing another $150 or so I'd strongly consider Canon's 24-105 f4 L IS.
Yeah it's an f4 but the IQ is tremendous, and the focal range is a bit more versatile while offering more reach.

For a walk around lens, what about a 50mm f1.8 for about a $110. great pics, doesn't hurt the wallet!

I'm just not pleased with the 75-300. I have had it for quite some time and it isn't as sharp as I want. I will let it go for $ 120. I am seriously looking at the 24-105 and wondered about others experience with it. Really appreciated all of your responses. Nice to hear from all of you! LeeAnn

LeeAnn, I'll agree with swampgator in that the 24-105mm would be my choice. The 17-85 is a good lens but does not compare with the 24-105mm. Another lens to look at is the 17-40. It is an L lens as well. I photograph everything from events (one a year) to nature and wildlife and find that an f/2.8 lens is not a necessity. Some of my lens are f/2.8 lens, but I'm just as happy with an f/4 lens. Without knowing what you want to capture with your camera, it is a little difficult to make any better recommendations.

Remember, the f/stops here
