I am a PC man but check out the new IMac! 5k display! Tons of power! Top of the line model is not cheap. $4200.00 without software.

Configured similarly, equally capable, except that Macs cannot currently display more than 8 bit display color depth, and PC can do 10 bit with the appropriate graphics card and 10 bit capable display.

The Mac will be about 30%-40% more expensive.

If you go for a custom built machine (highly recommended), you can use enterprise-class hard drives, and small SSDs to cache multiple volumes (Asus and other mfgrs do this using Intel firmware) and other enhancements not available on Mac.

One is not better than the other unless you need the extra performance and color depth, then PC does have the advantage. It really depends, as it always has, upon the intended use of the computer. One should never decide on the platform until the software's hardware requirements are considered.

To put it another way, if you are into lifestyle computing, and performance is not a top priority, and you are willing to pay the extra $$$ for a computer, Mac is clearly the choice. If you need speed, color depth and the choice to put high quality drives, memory, CPUs and graphics cards - and you don't want to break the bank - then PC is a better solution. Both will work - but one targets "the experience" the other targets productivity.

Not sure about the comment above about app availability. If thousands of apps for the Mac are not enough, not sure what you want then. I have been a pc and mac owner, and would not buy a pc, particularly with Windows 8. As for software, again, plenty for the Mac. I just find a Mac a lot easier to use. Photo software readily available for either, Microsoft Office is as well. I don't think I have ever had an issue getting Mac software, oh, perhaps virus software, but then who needs that with a Mac.

Something I've found is that a Mac will last you a few years longer than most PC's with regards to having to upgrade because it can't handle it any more. Also how much is the "upgrade" cost for windows OS compared to the price for the Mac OS upgrades? I paid next to nothing for my Mac compared to what MS wants for their upgrades. I have been using my MacBook Pro 15" laptop for close to 7 years now and the only problem I have with it is the touch pad finally started acting up (considering its fallen off the bed a couple of times). And if it wasn't for the all machined aluminum housing, it would have been dead a long while back.

I did what Clint did and would never go back to a PC. I would only add that Macs have better hardware and last longer with less problems than the same amount of care given to PC's, in general, in my opinion. Hence, I'll pay more for the Mac.

I've been using a Mac since '97 and wouldn't switch to a PC unless I was paid to do so...and even then I would kick and scream. My current set up is a 2.4ghz i7 15" Macbook Pro with 16GB ram and a second monitor attached. I wish it had an SSD drive, but at the time of purchase, two years ago, they were way too expensive (it has a 750GB hard drive). I also have 2 external drives (1TB and 2TB Western Digital).

If you do go down the mac road (and you should) make sure you max the RAM upon purchase.

What other things will you be using this computer for? Are you looking for a desktop or laptop? What program(s) will you be using to edit (I suggest LR).

I use a mac. Love the built in iPhoto. Easy and versatile when photos need a fix or some pop.

I started with the Apple IIe and switched to IBM in the early 1980's. I now use both Dell and Apple.

I read an article a while ago about how the Mac is very similar in price to a Windows machine when you compare similar equipment over the long term. People tend to keep and use their Macs longer than Windows machines. I'm not sure if that's a reliability issue or functionality, but seven years isn't unusual for a Mac

Apple has free OS updates, vs $100+ for Windows. The Mac is very stable. I have laptop and desktop Macs, and they have never locked up or shut down on their own.

I use both macbook pro and windows pc. I like macbook pro for editing photos on PS6. But I like pc to do everything else. PC has more flexibility and it is easy to move around. Of course this is my experience. Others may think differently. I use specialized font that needs the use of alt key. Mac alt key does not work the same way pc alt key works. Mac keyboard has limitations. mac does not have anything similar to Windows explorer.

This argument / discussion is even done with serious professional photographers.. But many of them, can afford to and do use both. The PC is more adaptable for less and can be more powerful. Mac used to be the go to for artists and designers MAINLY because it was the only thing that Adobe ran on but also because of image display. Now, because, with PCs you can get graphics boards that co-compute images and output to hdmi with extreme accuracy, the PC is more capable especially if you use multiple monitors in your post processing. I have 2 monitors on my machine. All control and general computing on the left monitor which is a Dell UP2414Q 24" 3840 X 2160 Ultrasharp Monitor - 6X55C and the image goes to a 50" plasma TV when I want to serious edit. The tv is my home theater when not being used for editing.
Note: The Dell was about $1100.00 and is very good by itself for editing. But, I sometimes enjoy irritating the wife by using the tv for my projects when she wants to watch soaps. lol The point is that, my Dell monitor is better than the Apple Mac Monitors and my 2 gb graphics card in my computer and 32 gb memory and my 8 tb of hard drive could not easily be matched on a mac. I built the machine myself, and can easily add to it or change it as necessary. You buy Mac and that's it till you buy a new Mac. My Processor is an Intell I 7 and if necessary I could go buy a new Intell faster I-7 and or replace the mother board.

Trey, I've used a PC for over 20 years. However, my first computer was an Apple IIe. I started doing digital imaging sometime around 1996. Where I worked had Corel Draw installed and I stayed after hours to work on my photos, only the bare minimum of processing. I still had a full darkroom at my disposal and digital was limited at the moment.

Anyway, about 8 months ago a friend of mine wanted to upgrade his computer collection and asked me if I wanted to buy his 27" iMac. Best thing I ever did. Most of my digital images are printed to 12x18 inches and on the iMac I can work on them at almost full print size. The other format I print is 16x20 and even that is close to full size without a lot of scrolling. As I said, best thing I ever did for my photography, recently.

You also have to understand that Apple has a VERY generous gifting program to high profile venues in order to get them to use Mac machines. Apple also is extremely aggressive in providing discounts to college users similar to Adobe's College, University, Teacher, Student discounts for software and makes it easy for students to purchase their Mac using their government grant money right there in the student bookstore. This has been going on since the early 90's when IBM was the main competition and Apple was fighting them. Hollywood always showed a Mac in their images on TV and in the movies, even when you knew the "software" the actor was talking about on his computer with the big Apple on the back wouldn't run the software. That said, both are good. IT is the user NOT the computer that makes the image. The MAC or PC is the tool and both are good. PC is just easier to enlarge and improve as you move forward where Mac you buy new when you want or need to upgrade.. When I was going to college, I got my first Mac (I had managed an all Apple Store and been an Apple National accounts manager for Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas and Colorado for 4 years but we had Apple 2, Apple3 and Lisa) So I added a mac to my PC group. Mac was and still is extremely unfriendly in a network environment but by itself is a very good graphic machine. However, it is extremely proprietary and everything MUST be purchased from Apple.

I am going to give you a "non scientific" VERY layman's answer to your question.
I am an older artist/photographer that just went back to college (went previously for a degree in the "non computer age.")
I ONLY knew and used PC's and thought that Macs were for younger kids that wanted the "trendy" brand. (Ala Nike.) But as soon as I started classes, my older PC gave way. At first I purchased a Lenovo Yogi Pro 2, but apparently the unit I got was defective. I returned it after two weeks, and got a suggestion to "try" a Mac...
I will NEVER (should never say never, but...) get a PC again. I just LOVE how much EASIER it is to put things into files, move files around, etc... I am now LEARNING Adobe whereas before I was caught up in just using BASIC computer functions. I just find it SO much easier to maneuver with a Mac I guess..
So it seems that "maybe" that is the answer?
If you are less "computer savvy" and want to do post processing, and other creative stuff with a computer, get a Mac.
But if you know your way around a computer well, don't mind the additional steps of functions that need to be used on the PC, then stay on that course...
Hopes this helps...
