I really like the expression of this horse and the handler's hand but I'm not very happy with the background. What would you do?

I'm not really sure...I like the concrete block and the open barn door. Not thrilled with the security light, the underside of the roof and I'm not sure that I like the fact that his ear is just a little bit above the roofline on the left. Maybe even distracting. Maybe I'm just too picky??

What editing software do you use? I would select the background and create a new layer and on the new layer use a "gaussian blur" filter. I downloaded your image and applied the blur to the background only. Hope you don't mind me downloading your image and applying the filter to show the result.

Love the photo. Blurred background really improves it as the horse really stands out now.

I use Photoshop Elements 8. I do like that better. It kind of softens the edges. But it looks good that way. Still am not a fan of the security light...

I can't do it... lol but if I could I would just edit out the light in the right side of the eve. Personally- I like the lines of the barn. helps put the horse in a location and tells part of the story... if that makes any sense.

I'm not sure about Elements 8 but I use Photoshop PS5 and it has a "Clone Stamp Tool" that make it very easy to remove the security light. I also added a little vignette (maybe too much) to the corners.

In Photoshop, you could do this trick with "Lens Blur" instead of Gaussian Blur which would look more like a lens with out of focus elements.

He was such a funny boy. Lots of character...every shot of him was a good one (well...he was always posing or doing something worth taking a photo of). Now I'll have to figure out how to get rid of the light in PS! Thank you!

Use Photoshop CS5 I would on one layer remove the background then create a bottom layer of a background I liked. Or for a second choice I would diffuse the background using filters in most photo editing software.
