Lens Dropped

and hit the pavement pretty much straight on. The lens hood split, but the glass is ok, and the auto focus is working. Should I ship it back to Sigma or keep on shooting. I have never had this happen before. The strap gave out on me.

Ooooouch, my sympathy goes out to you. I would call Sigma and get an estimate on how much to check your lens out. Then on the other hand you maybe OK, tough call.

Take a few shots, look especially for any distortions that may indicate misaligned elements. If everything works OK, and there aren't too many rattles, all should be well.

Mark I have no advice about the lens, but am curious what the ," strap gave out", means?
Was it a big lens with a dedicated strap of its own?
Was it the stock strap designed for the unit?
Where was the camera, did you have two straps, one on the camera and one on the lens? Good luck

It was a sling strap that was connected to the factory stap connections. The loop came loose in the buckle. Ironically, I am waiting on a dual strap connector to show up in the mail (it should be here any day now).

The camera was actually slung very low on my hip which I think is good as it kept the drop to about 2ft.

Hope your lens survived.

Have not use a strap in 50 years, carry my cameras by the lens but the newer lens barrels are fatter and my hands are small and i feel less secure than i used to.
Do they make something like rubber bands that would give a better grip?

I just got done photographing the back of a ketchup bottle from across the room, and everything came out sharp and the autofocus works fine. I think I am ok. I cant wait for my double strap connector to arrive.

So? I once dropped a brick on my toe. Hurt like hell for a few days then it was ok...

Not sure about your toes, but mine are quite a bit tougher than electronics ;)

That's good to know, but the old Miranda that fell with the tripod 30 years ago hasn't healed yet. How much longer should I wait? :D

The warranty wouldn't cover a drop, so you'll have to pay for any repair or inspection. Test it thoroughly, and if it's okay, you're all set.

It sounds like you are OK. I would continue to use it and watch your photos. If it appears they are ok then don't waste the money in sending it to Sigma.

You are not the first to have a hood save a lens! I have had a hood save a 70-200mm for me. This is why I ALWAYS keep a hood on my lenses!

Do replace the hood with a new one! They are cheap insurance policies.

That is why I also keep lens hoods on my lenses. I have had to replace a hood the broke when the lens fell but the lens survived $20 vs $250

I dropped a Nikon 85mm 1.8 on a hotel room floor. The only time I have ever dropped a lens. It ended up with a flat spot on one side of the hood. Hood has been replaced although old hood is perfectly serviceable. Hoods are good things, filters also. Both work well for protection and you can take them off while shooting if they really bother you.

I recently had my Sigma 500mm f4.5 fall over on the tripod and land right on the lens hood, it bent the hood which I was able to straighten but the focus, manual and automatic no longer worked. I contacted Sigma Canada and they advised to send it in for an estimate. I was contacted within a week of sending and they stated that the lens was a previous model and that they no longer worked on the older models. I said that when I called I told the person that I spoke to what model the lens was and they said it was not a problem. I had also sent a confirmation email with all the details of the lens and the issues. I was told that in most cases parts may not be available but they would have a look at it to see what could be done and that if it could not be repaired they would just send the lens back.
Seven days later the lens was delivered and they had completely rebuilt the manual and auto focus system, serviced and cleaned the lens and shipped at their expense. The lens looked brand new.
When I checked the invoice (I had given them permission to charge my M/C for the repairs) there was no charge and they stated that due to the misunderstanding all repairs were done free of charge as a courtesy.
As far as I am concerned Sigma Canada went above and beyond with their first class service.
