with d800 and nikon 70-200 i set up for BBFocus, no shutter button focus and it works fine.

Adding kenko auto extention tubes but changing nothing else, the shutter button now also focuses.
Remove the tubes and the shutter button stops focusing again just like its supposed to.

Is this a software/lens bug or operator stupidity?

I have the Vello brand tubes and don't recall if that happens with me on my Canon EOS. I'll play today to see.

That is really strange. There is no reason for this, so your camera must be haunted. :D

As far as the camera knows, those tubes are just another lens. I can't imagine why it would now give you two focus buttons. I'd tell Kenko about it. They might have an explanation, or it could be a selling point for them.

Have you tried it on other cameras? I have manual tubes.

It seems to me that it might be a contact problem between the lens and the camera or the lens extension tubes and either the lens or the camera.

That has to be it. There's no other logical explanation. :)

Ask Kenko, but I would not bother asking Nikon.
