I thought that Apple had stopped development and support of Aperture. I had resigned myself to using Aperture until Apple releases what ever program replaces it. As soon as I installed Yosemite OS 10.1.0 it detected that 7 other applications now had to be downloaded/updated, including Aperture. Apple says that the Aperture update is needed to for compatibility with this new OS. It also addresses stability issues. Gawd knows THAT was needed!

They are also providing new RAW converters; also needed.

I downloaded the OS in about an hour. I think downloading the needed upgraded to my seven applications is going to take all night!

This is gonna take a while!

I just downloaded and installed the new version of Aperture. This is significant improvement. It has some new features that I like. I played with it for about a half hour and tryed out a lot of new things. It never crashed.

If you are still using Aperture I recommend you download these free upgrades.

I just did the same and noted the RAW converter update on one of my photos. However, I have not had time to discover other improvements. Can you perhaps list some that you have found.
BTW, I plan to stick with Aperture after the issuance of the new program....unless it proves to be a significant improvement.

One thing to be careful of... for those who like the cutting edge of upgrades, printer drivers may or may not be updated. By going to the newest OS, you may make your printing system DOA if the printer mfgrs haven't made drivers for this upgrade. So please be careful. Proceed with caution!

You will be delighted with this version of Aperture. If you have not already installed NIK filters within Aperture, you should seriously consider doing so. I have the biggest/fastest Mac Book Pro that Apple makes. It seems to now be just a little snappier. It was fast enough before. Many of the improvements seem to be oriented towards the cloud and transferring things between the computer and iPhone or iPad. My wife has both. I'm not enthusiastic about moving to the cloud. I played with the new Aperture late into the night last night. It never crashed! There have been a lot of changes. I think there are still very minor bugs. At one point it would not let me select a new photo, other than the one I was working with! I closed Aperture and restarted it and I was able to select a new picture. Overall, I find it a big improvement.

I will attach a JPG below. This one is 100% size. The earlier version would only let me export JPG images at 50%.

I went nuts with the sky in the attached photo. If you pixel peek you will see some noise in the upper sky that I introduced by pushing things too far. I could easily clear that up by going in PS and selectively using a noise filter. I did not think it was worth my time.

Luckily, this OS upgrade also included new drivers for my HP printer. I have not used it yet. If it gives me a problem I'll let you know.

The upgrade went faster than I expected it to. It was done before I went to bed. I then stayed up for a few hours and played with it. I like it!

Our IT guy at work just started testing it (before rolling it out)...and really liking it. He too was amazed that he didn't have to fix any printer issues. That's the first time that's ever happened so far he's really impressed the the speed of it.

Thank you Cdouthitt. I'm going to recommend to my wife and son that they upgrade to this new OS.

Oh rats! I just discovered that DxO Optics Pro 9 no longer works since I upgraded to the OS. :-(

I sent DxO a message asking them to fix the issue.

DxO got back with me asking details.

If and when they fix the problem, I'll let you know.

Yosemite (OS X 10.10) will support Aperture but the next OS X (10.20?) will not.

I hope you are wrong about this because I really like the this improved version of Aperture.

I trust you remark is simply morbid pessimism, not based on fact.

It does not sense that Apple would go to all the effort of such a good upgrade, only to kill it in short time.

This is a June article from MacWorld: http://www.macworld.com/article/2375212/apple-retires-aperture-and-iphoto-to-be-replaced-with-photos-for-os-x.html

Adobe announcement for moving from Aperture to LightRoom:
http://www.macrumors.com/2014/10/16/adobe-lightroom-to-aperture-plugin/

On 8/18/14, Apple made this announcement re Photos:
http://www.imore.com/photos-os-x-yosemite-explained

The Photos App will be supposedly more powerful than iPhoto but less capable than Aperture.

I just got this response from DxO support:

David,

We have just released DxO Optics Pro v9.5.2 build 133 which is Yosemite compatible. Please update at this time.

I did as they suggested and it now works. :-)

I also had problems opening PS CS5 from within te new Aperture. I got a message to update JAVA. I did and that also works. :-)
