I have had this photo for several years, not because its great, it isn't, not because its a fond memory, it isn't. I have kept it because it is so bad.

Every now and again, I open a copy in Lightroom or Photoshop, and try to improve it, my success rate thus far is zilch.

My feelings are that if I can ever make this image even a little more presentable, my time investment in Photoshop, Lightroom and Elements would have been worthwhile.

Can anyone give me a couple of pointers on what to do?

I know this image is too far gone to ever be good, its out of focus, badly exposed etc., but I would like to be able to
make some kind of improvement to it and learn from that experience.

I agree, not easy to work with. I think this, overall, looks better and makes a decent "family snapshot" type photo. I used Nikon Capture NX2 only.

You guys are making this look so easy, but you are also not saying the how.

Please remember, the image itself is not something I need, but a means to an end. I need to learn how to do it.

Searcher, as stated I only used Capture NX2. I started with a bit of Shadow Protection which lightened the shadows a bit. I then zoomed in on the two ladies and used several Color Control Points to change some coloration, white balance, saturation, and such only on the small areas of shadow. It's just a matter of trying combinations and see what comes out. Couldn't get it all, but close.

Oh yeah, obviously I cropped. The image is not good enough to just have them in it so used a full body crop and the Rule of Thirds.

You may not like what I have done to your photo, but if you are interested in what had been done, it was:

I used ArcSoft's "Pro +64" software for portraiture and then cropped and added a vignette in Lightroom.

In Pro +64, I used a setting to lift her cheeks, a setting to slenderize her face, a setting to even and smooth her skin, a setting to enhance her nose, a setting to place blush on her cheeks, a setting to add color around her eyes, and an eyeliner, a setting to lightly add eyelashes, a setting to slightly enlarger her eyes, a setting to whiten her eyes, and a setting to shape and thin her eyelashes.

On the contrary Doug, I like what you done because it shows me that the shadows can be effectively removed and leave a canvas for adding blush, splashes of colour and so on. There was not a lot of detail in the face to begin with, and your technique has effectively smoothed out the imperfections, (the shadow blotches) which is what I failed on numerous occasions to do.

The only thing that bothers me is that at some point I will have to add Portrait Pro to my software list and learn how to use that as well.

stupid question, is portrait pro the same as portrait professional? I have a really old version, may not even have a version number (as in 1) Have contemplated trying it again to see if it is worth the time and money. Thanks

No, they are different software programs from two different companies.. The software that you have mentioned is from a company named Anthropics. My software is from ArcSoft, an entirely different animal and I have found it to be the absolute best software whenever a portrait needs embellished and or needs some corrections ~ which all portraits do ! ;)

Young man, Portrait + 64 is the easiest software to work within that I have ever had an opportunity to experience !

If you feel that you need a software program for portraits only, it is the only way to go ! Once I've used it, I transfer my image into Lightroom (a habit of mine) for cropping and for adding a vignette. :D

Once again, it's been my pleasure contacting you again !

No, Sir, they are completely different forms of software and each is made by a different company ! I say this to you, because I have both !

Portraitprofessional, which is the software you are referring to, does not have the amount of sliders nor the infinite options of which to choose and, like aforementioned, I also have this software too ! Best said, I have both software programs and they are NOT the same.

Paste this into your browser and once it opens, check out the + version and also note that ArcSoft is the MFG..

Bill, thank you for reassuring me of my sanity !

I realize that SoHillGuy had easily confused the two simply because their names are very much alike, but their software is very much different !

ArcSoft's Portrait + 64 is far more intense than the software you are referring to and ArcSoft's Portrait + 64 is far, far, far more expensive and I love it !

If you are interested, why not send me a RAW portrait photo that you don't have a need for and I will post process it with my ArcSoft software and, then, you do the same with the software that you attest is your favorite.
Once we both have completed our tasks, let's share our results ! OK ???

Yet, should you not be interested, may we remain UHH forum friends, walk away smiling, and I wish for you a great day :D

Best Regards,
~Doug~
