I have noticed this blemish or greyish mark on my pictures and I cannot figure out what it is. Is this a result of a dirty lens? This only happens in certain pictures almost always when I am shooting sunsets or at night. I have attached a couple of images so you can see. If I am shooting horizontially then the blemish is on the top-left corner, if I shoot vertically, the blemish shifts to the top-right. Any help would be appreaciated

Top Left Corner-Its not a cloud

Top Right Corner
Top Right Corner...

You probably have a piece of lint or something hooked on your mirror that moves with the mirror motion, sometimes it shows up and sometimes it doesn't. Take off your lens and use the mirror up for cleaning procedure. Shine a light ito the body and look for the lint around the mirror and the sensor. It is in exactly the same position in both your samples though. Probably doesn't show in #3 because it would be in the tree.

Since you post a thumbnail nothing is visible. When you ask this type of question, post an original or at least a 1:1 cropped version of what you are looking at. :hunf:

To post original, if you do not know how, click on the store original check mark next to the browse button.

Looks like dust n the sensor to me.
Shoot a photo of a light colored blank wall or put a piece of tracimg paper over the lens. Make sure whatever you shoot is way out of focus. Use a small aperture, 22 or so, long shutter speed is fine, camera motion is not an issue. Then check to see if it shows up consistently in the same place.

If it is the upper-right part of the photo the dust is in the lower right part of the sensor- looking at it from at the lnes side.

I did what you recommended and yes, the blemish shows up on the top left part of each image.....so dust or particle is in the lower left part of the sensor?

No, the article will be on the lower right, exact opposite of where it shows on the print.

Is this something that I can take care of myself or should I take it in to a camera shop and have someone do it for me? I am a newbie and just want to make sure that I am not going to do more damage than good. I know there are several videos and step by step instructions on how to clean sensor online, is it difficult?

Yes, as you are looking at the sensor.
Cleaning is another issue.

Hopefully it it something that can be blown away using a rocket-shaped blower.

There are a lot of hits on search engines about sensor cleaning. Here is one:

Dust on the sensor, needs cleaning. No big deal. (and you have it on the seagull picture too) too...

MT- I respect your posts- correct me if i'm wrong-work through with me on this:
If the dust is on the upper left of the print- we agree it will be on the bottom but I think it will be on the bottom right if we could view it from the back of the camera and bottom left if viewed from the front. Make sense?

Honestly you do not have to clean anything yet. I am certain Canon offer in it's bag of goodies a cleaning option within the editor.

If not, you can be certain that other software that you may already use will do it too.

Otherwise you can do it yourself if you are good at Post processing.

Best bet to check your sensor w/o lens interference is to take a picture of a white surface w/o a lens and then use contrast/brightness to check for defect. If under these conditions you see a ton of artifacts, have it cleaned. If not, well, up to you. Usually there is a 'cleaning mode that keeps the mirror up and open the shutter for cleaning (check your manual). Note that you do not want to use any product but those that are made for cleaning s photo or video sensor. Cost is about $20.00.

Goofy, from that view yes. I always refer to my sensor same as film, from the focal plane when facing forward since if you are looking at a picture from the front, and looking at the sensor from the front (lens side) then you're correct. An artifact on the left upper portion, as the OPs would be on the left lower when viewed from the lens mount. My view goes back to my emulsion side days so I could keep that straight.
