Thanks to all of you for your very helpful comments and suggestions. I wondered before I posted my question whether it would be a worthwhile discussion and now I really see how many factors need consideration which is why I had trouble deciding. Now I'll try to take it all in and make a decision. Seems to me I can't go too far off with either the D750 or D810; each has its own merits and limitations. Thanks again to all of you for the generosity of your responses.

Biggest difference I see is that the 750 buffer is smaller than the on the 810. If your shooting wildlife / sports this might be important; if you shoot landscape mostly it is a moot point.
The article referenced in an early post in Photography Life addresses this in detail.

Love that quote. I think that it's true for all of us, regardless of age.

There are lots of comparisons between those two models. If they were the same price, there wouldn't be much discussion about which to buy, although I still prefer the D750. I don't like the idea of those huge files from that 36MB sensor, and I don't want to have to start buying CF cards.

The D750 has Wi-Fi, but not GPS, while the D810 has GPS, but not Wi-Fi. Nikon should give more thought to what to include with each model. Both of these features are available - together - on cameras costing a fraction of what the Nikons cost.

The files from the 24MB sensor are also huge: 50,000,000 bytes.

Dear Hoggers
I want to upgrade from my Nikon D5300 to either the D750 or the D810. I have two related questions: strictly from the pov of camera capability it seems the 810 is a superior camera in terms of mp and low light. Is there any reason to choose the 750 instead, other than cost and the tilting screen? I'm interested in landscape, nature and people shooting.
My second question is, whether to sell my D5300 and Dx lenses or keep them.
All feedback welcome.

What is your lens budget? The 810 will be very unforgiving of anything but the best optics. Are you willing to spend $1500-2500 per lens for a few great zoom lenses? Will you be printing 30 x 40 murals of your landscapes? When you photograph a lady, do you really think she wants to see every pore on her face? Can your computer handle processing 36MB RAW files? Will you spend 1K for a good tripod and ball head? Are you a serious and methodical enough photographer to get good results from such a camera? Everyone dreams of driving a Ferarri, but very few have the skill to really do it. The same goes for Cameras. Only you can answer this, but it'll require serious thought. Don't get fought up in GAS.

Thanks for your very realistic questions!
The one about the computer handling 36mb RAW files I don't know how to answer; can someone help me find the answer--I'm using an iMac less than a year old but how many gbs is ever enough?
The lenses yes; the lady--who can say?
As for GAS-- how could you tell ?! 😎
Thanks for the cold sober challenge!!

The "can your computer handle 36mp files" is not a relevant question. If it can handle 24mp files, it can handle 36mp files.

"The D810 needs the best optics" is also no different than "The D750 needs the best optics." It's really the D5300 which needs the best optics, because it has the highest pixel density.

Dear Hoggers,
I want to thank all of you who responded to my question about upgrading either to the Nikon D750 or the D810. Your comments were all very salient and helpful.
In the end, I went for the D810, and so far am quite happy with it.
Ironically, after all our discussion, by decision was made on two things that hadn't come up: I loved the way the 810 felt in my hand, and I loved its quiet click! Go figure!
Thanks again.
Robert
