D7100 vs D810

I currently have a D90 and looking to update. All my lenses are DX format with my favorite lens being the Nikon 18 to 300MM 5.6. Can I use this lens on a D810 in the cropped mode, and if so, would the quality of the image be same, better or worse than if I shot it with a D7100?

Welcome to UHH. I don't know if your photographs would be better or not. I have a D7100 and an 18-200 lens. I also have a D800 and a D810. I would not consider using a DX lens on an FX camera even in DX mode. To me, that defeats the purpose of an FX sensor. You might consider keeping your D90 as a back up if you can. If not, you can sell the D90 and your DX lenses and invest in FX lenses. Good luck.

Welcome to our forum!

The D810 is a great camera. If you get one, you'll love it. You can use the DX lenses for a while. Then you can sell them on ebay, as I have done, and buy FX lenses. Take a look at this Nikon lens simulator.

Here's a comparison of specs from snapsort. Check the differences between them without putting too much emphasis on the "score."

I to started with a D90(1st DSLR) & moved up to a D7100, never looking back. The upgrade was like coming from a film SLR to the D90. The 7100 is so much faster (love the 51 point auto focus). No more knocking the mode dial with new dial lock. I took the money saved & purchased a Nikon 300mm F4 W/ a 1.4 converter shortly thereafter. What a differance over D90 W/ a Nikon 70 to 300. So unless you plan on upgrading all your DX lens, I believe you're wasting your money. Being in one of the top bird migration hot spots in N. A. (Holiday Beach , Ontario Canada) the 300 mm F4 has not come off the D7100 since the bird migration started back in the beginning of Sept. The D90 is currently back up with all my other lens. PS know anybody looking for nice clean D90 or trade in on another D7100? Good luck in your decision & enjoy that new camera as much I am enjoying my new D7100

Don't do it.
D810 is a great camera but it is a FF. Using DX lenses on that thing makes no sense at all.
The D7100, a DX camera, is a better fit and you will have $$$ to spare to go somewhere else than in your backyard.

When it comes to sensors, the D7100 native DX is superior to the D810 used as a DX.

Side by side for other comparisons...

Not a good option. I would sell the 18-300. I have sold all of my DX lenses when I moved to the D800 and invested in FX. Painfully expensive but with good lenses I could not longer blame the equipment for bad photography. In fact my photography has improved.

Don't quote me on the numbers, because math is the only thing I'm worse at than spelling. Anyway, if you use an 810 in "DX mode" and it will automatically go into DX mode if you are shooting with DX lenses, then instead of the 36 mp photo you are expecting, your'e going to end up with like 16 mp photos. (someone else more knowledgable than me can give you the actual numbers) but you will get more MP out of the same lens on a D-7100.

Now, here's the funny part, if you do get some FX lenses and use them on a DX camera until you are ready to make a switch, you will be using the "sweet spot" of the lens. Most "non high end" lenses fall off at the corners, which you won't be using because of the crop sensor. If I were you (thank your lucky stars you aren't me :-) ) I would get a D-7100, and start collecting FX glass as you can. Then if/when you make the switch, you are ready to go.

I have FX glass 24-70 and 70-200 2.8 lenses (2 of each for my 2 camera bodies) I just did a few weddings, 3 sets of senior photos, a family reunion, and some misc shoots... and I had dropped my back up camera. I could have afforded any camera up to and including a D-4, but ended up going with the D-7100. Same controls as my D-7000, and it takes amazing photos. I couldn't justify spending the extra money for my type of shooting, and when I've been able to sell 40x60 prints from my current D-7000. Can't imagine needing to go larger. Only my opinion. Good luck with whatever you choose.
