Got this shot of a Wood Duck last week. It came out of the camera with background blacked out. Not exactly sure how that happened but happy with the result! Taken with Nikon D7100, Sigma 150-500 @ 450mm, f8, 1/1250, ISO - 1250.

A flash can cause a background to darken. Do you have an onboard flash on your camera that may have fired without your realizing it?
Since you didn't use one I suspect it's the coincidental combination of background, ISO, metering, and exposure (plus any potential exposure compensation). An exceptional image.

No flash...shoot on manual. I believe it was coincidence. Thank you, Mike! Appreciate the feedback and the kindness.
