I found this lens for sale used under 500 bucks, seems like a good deal but how well does it work? Has anyone used this lens? Is it sharp? Fast enough for High School sports. Wildlife photos? I have a 70 -300 4.5 -5.6nikon but would like to get a bit tighter shots, money is definitly a concern.

Make sure you get a warranty or a trial period, they are NOTORIOUS for front or back focus depending on your camera body. The 150-500mm is a bit better, but the 50-500mm is the best of the bunch, also the most expensive. But in lenses, quality costs money.

Thanks MT, I will keep looking and see if I find the other lenses. Do you think a 400 would be worth looking into or is it to close to the 300 I already own?

You don't say what body you are using it on, but I assume its a crop sensor body. A 400mm F5.6 would make a very nice addition to what you now have for less money than the Sigma 170-500mm zoom and would give you a 600mm F5.6 in a 35mm equivalent format.

I have a D90 and I just got my son a used D-70. What would you suggest for a 400mm in the under 500 price range?

I have one that I use for my Grandsons football and LaCrosse games and it works just great, you do have to use it on a mono pod. I use it on a D200 and D70
