John Greengo's Nature Photography Effort Scale

I just finished watching a creative live class by John Greengo. I think it's one of my favorite classes ever. He started his opening class by asking everyone how important photography was to them? Here is his scale to guage how serious you are about Nature Photography. It's a little humorous, but I think there are some really good questions for nature photographers to ask themselves. Has anyone else caught this class? What did you think of it?

http://www.creativelive.com/courses/nature-and-landscape-photography-john-greengo

1. Would you open the camera app on your cell phone?
2. Would you stop walking for a brief moment?
3.Would you roll down the car window?
4. Would you spend up to 15 seconds looking for a good angle?
5. Do you own a real camera that doesn't get cell service?
6.Would you buy, carry and use a normal size tripod?
7.Would you be willing to wake up early and walk a long way for a photo?
8. Would you plan a weekend around a photo opportunity?
9. Would you take a one week vacation from work just for photography?
10. Would you be willing to fly around the world for a single photograph?

I love the CreativeLive classes, but I missed this one!
And I'd have to answer "yes" to all the questions, and have done all but the last one :D

I only made it through #8, but I'm retired and every week is a vacation. :)

My answers would all be the same as yours, and I'm a retired carpenter. The only difference is that I've retired myself from odd jobs, unless they can be done camera in hand :-)

I can remember a while back emailing some wildlife photos to a friend and she would often write back saying... "How did you get those? I drove through there and didn't see anything!"

Ok, well first you have to park the car and get out and walk around.
You might even have to sit there for a while and wait for something to hopefully happen.
Wildlife doesn't necessarily work on your schedule, and some days you do wait and still come home with nothing.

But taking a quick drive through look can almost guarantee you will go home with no shots.

Swamp Gator ... I think you would enjoy watching John Greengo ... you probably know all the things he teaches already, but you would get a kick out of the things he says. :-)

Does doing the last one while in the Navy count?

You joined the Navy so you could take photographs all over the world? Why didn't I think of that when I was young!

No I joined the Navy to stay out of the Army & Viet Nam. I got to See Iceland, Panama, & Puerto Rico. Besides San Diego, Ca., Port Hueneme, Ca., & Davisville, R.I. Growing up a country boy and seeing the Hari Krishnas for the first time on my way to Boot Camp Was an experience as well.

Everything except #10, and if I could afford to fly around the world, I'd fill a few 32GB SD cards.

I've done all of those except #1. I 'would' fly around the world for a single photograph, but I haven't. I have flown to a lot of places to take photos including Iceland, Norway, Kenya, Indonesia and Thailand. Of course it was for a lot more than one photograph. I'm retired so this is what I do with my time and my money. As my dear wife says, I don't make money at photography, I spend money at photography!

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, no.
1-9 I already do.
10 - why take one when you can take others as well?
