I did call Sony support last night, and he suggested resetting it to Factory Defaults. Should have thought of that. I did it, the camera shut off as it should (into standby) and I thought the problem was solved.

Used it to today to make videos, and it now stays on again. GRRRR. So I'll be sure to do full power-down, but will have to call Sony again.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

IF you haven't solved this problem yet, try these two things before you switch it off. Turn OFF the eye start Auto Focus AND turn off the EVF/LCD sensor.

Or you could be sure to turn the entire camera off at the main switch. That should solve your problem.

GOOD LUCK!

Thanks Bill. Currently use the A580 (love it!) but seriously considering the A99. Any thoughts?

The Sony Rumor mill is making a lot of chatter about a possible A99ii. I have the A99, and it is a superb camera, but after seeing what the Sony A7Rii can do, I feel left out!

Thanks for your post. I too am a Sony A77II owner but have been unable to figure out how to have a dedicated back button auto-focus. Could you please explain to me in simple terms how to do that. I'm not very experienced. I would certainly appreciate any help.

See if this works Donnie:

Go to your menu. Move over to the Gear Icon.
Go to Gear 4 submenu. Scroll down to AF w/Shutter and set to "Off"

Then go back to the gear menu and slide over to Gear 6 submenu. Scroll down to Custom Key Settings. Click on it. Then decide which button you want to control your Back Button Focus. Go to it and click on it.

Once you are in the selection menu, scroll up or down to "AF on".

And there you have it... just that easy.

Thank you CHOLLY. Worked like a charm! I had tried before, but didn't turn the AF with shutter off.

Cholly nailed it, but BEWARE! For some inexplicable reason, my a77ii eventually reverts to shutter button focusing. I have many ruined shots because I didn't notice right away. I hope this is a defect in my camera and not how they ask work, and it probably is, because Sony support had no info on it. The guy suggested I turn off e-curtain shutter (no thanks) and to use only genuine Sony lenses (again, no.) I'll be sending it in for repair after the Perseids next month (I had it in after dropping it and didn't see it for six weeks, including shipping cross country.)

I would say just watch for the reverting. I even set a memory mode with all MY preferred camera defaults so when I'm done shooting something that required all sorts of custom settings like ISO, turning off stabilization, or whatever, I simply change to any other shooting mode then back to my memory mode to load my defaults. Pretty handy, and that will also again turn off shutter button focus, but eventually it comes back on.

I'm also concerned that I set it to not take a picture if it can't achieve focus, but it will take it anyway. I even checked to be sure NOTHING in the frame was in focus, thinking the camera would release the shutter if a single pixel was sharp, but nope - it still wasted a frame. Otherwise, I absolutely love the camera. I can't wait to see the next a99. If it's anything like the a7rii, it will be the camera to beat.

Thanks Desert Gecko. I'll be on the watch for that happening.

This is a tough one. :?:

Neither of the cameras I have or HAD access to would revert to earlier settings spontaneously under any circumstance. Puzzling behavior.

DG, I am assuming you adjusted your Priority Setup. (Gear Icon, submenu 4). You get three choices: Autofocus Priority, meaning it will only actuate the shutter if there is something in focus; Release Priority, meaning it will snap the picture whether something is in focus or not, and Balanced Emphasis, where the camera decides which of the two previously listed modes it will operate under.

I am concerned that your camera spontaneously flips back and forth between settings; that's a problem.

I would consider sending it in for service again. :(

Thanks, Cholly. Indeed, I probably have to send it back but like everything in photography, timing is key. I'm at Scout camp with my four sons at the moment, and I want it for the Perseids shower in a few weeks so I won't part with it at the moment.

Yes, I set it for AF priority. I like that Sony offers options here, but the setting has no effect on my copy of this wonderful camera. I'm thinking that this, plus the shutter button focus reverting indicates some software issue. I was going to try the firmware update first but I couldn't get it to run. Sony support suggested I try it on a different computer, but haven't as of yet. Who knows, that could solve this.

^^^I think you just NAILED it!

Do whatever you have to to update that firmware. The latest firmware is excellent, and it not only improves AF speed and accuracy, but it addresses other minor issues.

If you have to borrow a P.C. to update it, do so.
