This was taken at a rodeo at our county fair. Thoughts?

I think it's an excellent photo that portrays the bond between owner and an old friend. I do feel that if you allowed a bit more detail to show through that it would be more effective. I understand your difficulty trying to maintain detail in the white horse. That's why Photoshop Plug-ins like Nik Software's Vivesa 2 is so unique i how it does editing. I was able to isolate the just the area of the girl and brighten it for more detail. I hope you like the edit and explanation. Good work! Keep shooting and posting.

I love it Bob! That is exactly what I was thinking, "If we could just see a little more detail in the child's hat". I would have liked to see a little more of her face but the look in the horses eye, says it all! Nice pic indeed APhelps, thanks for sharing!

It would have been really difficult pulling selective detail using just Photoshop CS5. Vivesa 2 allows me that control and has changed my whole work flow and editing routine. Thanks for the compliment and again, kudos to the photographer for capturing this magnificent moment.

I know there was too much saturation in the photo. I turned it and the contrast up pretty far as to make the horse and it's pink hair pop. With the girl all I wanted was the outline of her hat against the black background...but it was a lot harder than I had expected with the lighting, there were security lights, lights from the arena and from the rides going on at the fair. I took a million images to get a few. Here is another one that I liked...it's a little 'softer'

I'll have to look into getting some more software. Thank you for the praise. It's nice to know that other photographers can enjoy my work!

I am with you Carman, those are exactly my thoughts. Can't do much about the face, but the detail in the image is great once it was modified.

Great image.

I too think it is a great shot and with Bob doing some retouching makes it near perfect

When I did these I didn't want too much of the girl. I felt like just the hat added a little mystery to the photo...? (maybe) But here is the only image I have of her face...I know it isn't much and it's pretty much right off my camera and not the prettiest. Just thought I'd add it sicne everyone wants to see her face. :)

I'm not sure what everybody is seeing (or not) in Bob's retouched photo. The result I see is a bunch of blown out pixels in the girl's hat and jacket.

Perhaps it is because of trying to retouch a low resolution image.

Yes, those area's needed more detail, but that is where a properly processed raw image (or properly exposed jpg) is needed. I too like plug-ins, but knowing how to properly use photoshop will get your further than buying a filter for every situation.

Editing a 72dpi image at 800x600 doesn't allow much latitude for pulling pixels out of thin air. it's the concept that I'm demonstrating not the perfect photo.

Bob,
Does uploading photos on here turn them low res.? Because it is definitely not a low res on my computer...

Not sure how to explain this, but here it goes...for me personally, it's not so much that I wanted to see what the girl looked like, but that the image of the girl in the first photo, whether it be her profile in the image or the indearing look on the horse's face, it leads me to want to see more of the girl's expression. Does that make sense?

I find this when a picture has either been taken at a certain angle or cropped to close to the edge, it makes your "eye" look for more. Still....in this photo it's really minor, it is a FANTASTIC image.

According to the instructions on posting images, it is my understanding that if you post one in it's original state, the website resizes it to 600X800

No it doesn't if your posting them as 800x600 or smaller. If you post them at a higher resolution the forum software downsizes them to fit within that 800x600 pixel maximum size. It's why I use Proprietary software, Perfect Resize, to downsize all my photos before loading them on here.
