I'm assuming my camera equipment is covered by my homeowner's policy. I'm going to call the company soon to verify my coverage. But, I have more than a normal person's equipment. I have two full frame bodies and several very expensive lenses (3 of them approach $2000). I'm not a professional, just a hobbyist. I'm curious ...

Does anyone have special riders or policies for their hobby equipment? I'm not interested in coverage for commercial or pro photography, only hobby.

Your standard Homeowners Policy will have coverage for cameras, but with an included limit of $2500. For more coverage you will need to ask your agent about a rider to increase that amount.

Get a rider on your home owners. They are not that expensive and are NOT subject to a deductible.

I pay $91 per year for $10,000 worth of insurance. And this covers anything for full replacement.

$10,000?
Well I guess that would cover my 600mm F4. I have a $50,000 rider and it costs me $248 annually. Its worth the peace of mind.

Consider: total loss value of all equipment
write of damage to most expensive piece of equipment

Then talk to your agent as to IF an either /or scenerio works out cheaper and is it worth it.

'all risks' cover is more expensive than lump sum house contents cover (which doesn't cover much out of the house)
so if you rarely take lots of equipment out at once ....do an all risk at a lower than total value.

Homeowners ins typically covers only standard risk for the cost when purchased. That is mostly fire and theft. There are a variety of coverage options. You really should talk to an insurance agent. For example, I have what is known as an "all risk" policy. It covers anything that happens to my gear anywhere in the world. Pays if I drop it, if it is stolen or lost, anything, and pays full replacement cost, not purchase cost. Costs me $1.50 per $100 insured value. Pricier then some policies, but cheap peace of mind. I just update the list yearly or when I add or remove an item and show the current price of each item where I bought it. In my case, that would be B&H. They repair or replace based on that price, since that is what my premium is based on.

If stolen don't forget Police Report. $25.00 here.

Your homeowners policy will not cover your equipment if stolen or damaged away from the house. I suggest contacting your insurance company to add a rider to cover your photography equipment. I was able to cover $5000 worth of equipment for $60/yr. with State Farm. There is no deductible, and it is all inclusive...it covers theft, damage, and loss.

Contacted the insurance company, I sent them a list of equipment to get a quote and find out what kind of coverage they have. I had to list all of my equipment and the value of each piece, and let's just say that I don't want my mother to find out how much I've spent on this stuff. omg, it adds up!

I had to supply my insurance company with a purchase receipt for each item covered. Same with my wife's diamond which is covered on the same rider.

I have what my insurance company, (State Farm - I know you'll ask), calls and APA policy. It is zero deductible and covers damage or theft. The policy is good here and abroad. You can also have other items listed such as jewelry or your favorite goat. You have to provide proof that you bought it and all the serial numbers etc. If you are professional you have to get a different policy.

If you look at my list, I've got the same situation. I called the insurance company and gave them an itemized list, and insured for replacement cost. Since I don't earn a living from shooting pictures anymore, they don't seem to have a problem with it. I recently had a car accident (rear ended) where a camera body and 3 lenses, camera bag, and other accessories were hopelessly locked in the trunk as the vehicle caught fire. Total loss. After a little haggling, I was paid in full. The other driver's insurance policy reimbursed my homeowners insurance carrier.
