no, not the old Bobby Vinton song... ;)

i love the ocean, i love the "blue hour", and Ruby Beach is one of my favorite places to shoot, so i figured i'd combine all three! taken at about 8:20 PM on an evening at the end of September. 5D, 24-135 @ 62mm, 30 sec @ f/7.1

I believe this is an example of Wow, impact and what ever else escapes as involuntarily in exclamation. No HDR wanted here. This one has more than the starkness of the deepest shadows against the sky and its reflection. It has content, that makes my eye go hiking and exploring. It has places for the viewer to go. It is more than nice, more than beautiful, more than great color. It does indeed cause a sensation of shrink for the viewer.

Now, the sticklers will complain about splitting the frame through the middle horizontally, but I did not notice, due to the slam this shot gives to my eyes. Does this one break the utility of that recommendation? It just may.

it is not all half's. The blue of the sky takes about a third, the right side of the water about the same on the right. Only on the left do we have a near even split. Even splits tend to feel static in the eye, but there are dynamics here starting over on the right. First the water leads the peninsula, that leads to the great rock behind. That sends one further left to be brought up short on that almost animated creature standing tall as and commanding as a Gandalf.

Notice that I avoided using the word rule.

thanks, Steve... Ruby Beach is almost all gravel unless the tide's out, but at low tide, if there's a moon, yeah, you can get some nice reflections from wet sand...
