Photographed a lovely young lady this past weekend. Had to settle for my 105 micro 2.8 Nikon lens (longest lens I own). I think it works just fine for a portrait lens. What do you Hoggers think?
I think the lens was fine and so is your young lady.

Lovely portrait Ultra-Man :-D
I think for this photo it took more than a great camera and lens. This one took having a full knowledge of lighting technique. You nailed this one. Excellent photo

I believe with the beauty of Her, you could have used a Kodak Instamatic and still got a beautiful shot.
Nice photo.
I don't see any downside to a long lens for portraits except that you need more distance between camera and subject.
Thank you everyone for the feedback. I'm just wondering if I need a 70-200 lens for portraits. All I hear is that you need one for the compression. Any thoughts?

I agree you nailed this one, great facial lighting, beautiful hair, a little more smile would have been nice. I have a 105 2.8 and have gotten fantastic shots, it really depends on the subject , and how much you want to capture. Perfect shot! A 50 mm 1.4 would be totally different pose and compression.

The 105mm f2.5AIS was the all time favorite portrait lens for Film Nikons in the 60's and 70's. It still brings top dollar when sold used. The 70 -200 would be lots heavier, but is a fine lens. You are doing just fine with your 105.

Excellent. You did a great job with the natural light. I would consider adding a little twinkle to her eye (catchlight) to give it more depth and draw your eye there, but it really is someting that you have to try to see if it "works" or not.
Great portrait Ultra-man A macro lens a a great lens to have. It really does double duty especially when someone knows how to use it
