Nikon D7100 and Tokina 11-16mm Question

drosegarden Loc: Kansas

I am considering buying the Tokina 11-16mm to use with my Nikon D7100. I am not sure if I should buy the Tokina 11-16mm f/2,8 AT-X, or if I should pay more, and buy the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 DX II. Has anyone had experience using either one or both of these with the Nikon D7100? If so, which lens would you recommend buying?

I would say skip them both and get a Tokina 12-28mm F4 AT-X PRO DX, you will likely get a lot more use out of it on the D7100

I've never used a D7100 or either of the Tokina lenses, but I do know the camera is great and the 11-16 has always been highly thought of. The difference between the two lenses (see attachment) is that the newer lens now has its own focus motor and "there have also been some adjustments made to the coating for slightly improved optical performance."

Your camera has a focus motor that will drive the older lens perfectly adequately. So I guess you have to decide whether the "coating adjustments" are worth the difference in price.

Yeah, what both MT and Craggy said.

I did buy the Tokina DX (not II) several months ago but it is very limited in focal range. I got it for a specific project which I have not done yet (lol), and I already had a good 18-200mm Nikon. Otherwise I would have gone for one of the good 10-20 or 10-24's.

At the wide end (10 or 11 mm) keep in mind you'll also need a good distortion correction program unless you really like the distorted look.

I have the D7100 and the Tokina 11-16mm f/2,8 AT-X and I am very happy with the images. however as a caveat, I also own the Nikon 17-35 2.8. If I did not have that lens I would do exactly what MT shooter is recommending since 11-16 on it's own, is a very narrow range.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I will look into the Tokina 12-28 F4 AT-XPRO DX. I hadn’t thought about that lens. I do own a good 18-200mm Nikon and a 50mm Nikon lens. The 18-200mm is what I use most of the time.

I hadn’t thought about the distortion correction. I do use CS6 and the lens correction in the raw camera portion of it. That is the only lens correction program I own.

DxO Optics Pro does excellent distortion and perspective correction.

I had one of them a while back, and I always hesitated to call it a zoom lens. 5mm? That's not much zoom.

I have read that Tamron has a 15-30mm lens in the works, can't wait to see that.

I have the Tokina 11-16mm DX and the Tokina 17-35mm FX lens. Both are fantastic with minimal distortion

For just distortion correction I went with DxO ViewPoint. It's only $79.

I'm mainly just a vacation shooter but I agree with MT that the Tokina 12-28 f/4 is a great choice. I usually have my D7000 mounted with the Tokina 12-28 for a walk around setup for landscapes and city scenes as it is just wide enough and has enough zoom so you don't miss those close up shots. It is also good for many of those interior shots where you can't use a flash. It weighs less that my other travel combo, D7100 with a Nikon 18-300, and really takes a great picture. I also have the Nikon 18-200 and it works very well but I prefer the Tokina over it for the above usage. Good luck.

I own the AT-X. It is rated better picture quality than the DX II. I use the lens for landscapes, and the picture quality is very good. It is a wonderful lens. Save yourself some money.

Just my personal opinion but I would recommend the 11-16 over the 12-28.
You don't buy these lenses for their zoom range or their narrow end.
You buy them for the wide end.
While it only sounds small, 1mm at the wide end is significant.
Personally I would buy a 10mm-20mm or even the Sigma 8-16mm.
