Which is a better lens for macro and micro shooting, the Nikon 85mm, or Nikon 105mm ? I am new to photography and I want to take portraits and close-ups. Any advise will be of great help.

Both offer excellent IQ. The 105 will allow a greater distant from the subject for a given magnification, which is generally an advantage. You cannot go wrong with either. :)

Even macro lenses will focus to infinity.

Apparently Nikon has discontinued the 85 macro lens. The 105 focuses from 12 inches to infinity.

Quick question this minimal focusing distance, this is the distance from end of lens, or sensor?

I really like the 105G f/2.8.

Will the Nikon 105 macro lens act as a portrait lens also. or do I have to invest in the 24-105 for this, I find this confusing.

The 105mm f/2.8 will do nicely for both your needs. No need for the zoom to shoot portraits unless you have a need for wider angles as well

I think a 105mm 2.8 would be your best bet in the long run..If in the future you decided to go for a full-frame camera, this lens would work as well for both Macro and portraiture..You won't ever have to buy another lens for those purposes..I've had a Nikon 105 AF 2.8 NON-d for ovr 10 years..It is the sharpest lens I own.

While 105mm is pretty nearly an ideal focal length for portraiture, most macro lenses, and the Nikkors in particular, are in my opinion too sharp. I like Nikon's 105 or 135 DC lenses for this purpose. Of course, you may shoot NEF and correct in post processing, increasing the macro's versatility. My personal favourite Nikkor portrait lens is the 105 f/2.5 (autofocus is not really that useful for portraiture).

The 105/135mm DC Lenses are amazing.

When you want that eye and those eyelashes to 'pop', not sure there is such a thing as too sharp, eh? ;-)
