Jambulee, Thanks for your inputs. I'm going to try doing it again, since I wasn't satisfied how it looked when I did it the other day. Arnold

I used a Nikon D300 with a Nikon 500mm f-4 manual focus lens to take this photo. Camera was set-up to ISO 640, speed 1/2000, f-stop f-5.6. It was a cloudy, day so I had very poor lighting.

I used OnOne Perfect Mask and their background to add the sky to this photo, and further enhanced it with Photoshop CS4 this photo.

I would appreciate your critiques and feedback how I could improve this photo. Thanks, Arnold

Since you have no qualms about adding things to your photos try adding a couple of catch lights to the eyes, that will bring them to life, instead of two black holes in its head. Great PP work I do like what you did.

Marcomarks, Thanks for your inputs. Your comments really made me think that I must think more like an artist and that is something I'm not very good at. Arnold

It's possible that people don't like the blue sky because the bird is sitting there in space with too much sky. The lack of any other object in the photo to create perspective and size in the mind makes the combination almost unrealistic.

Personally I like the sky version and agree with your preference. Since you can insert a sky that well you might consider adding some foliage of a tree, maybe as a natural frame up the left side, or under/behind the lower portion of the bird and up the left side a bit, to make it not be so stark and alone in the clouds.

Just a 2 cent opinion... Nice shot, by the way.

Arnold, you did a perfect sky replacement.......and perversely I prefer the original image with the white sky to the perfectly good blue.

I'll have to agree - it looks like an outdoor flash / postcard with the added sky - IMO - I Love the bird - I want this much feather detail - and in bad light, no less!

Wolf, Thanks for taking your time and providing your honest critique. doit your way, b my guest. I have a included the original RAW image saved as JPG before I made any enhancements. The thing that I'm realizing putting all this time to enhance this image was a waste of my time. Yep, I thought it looked better, but should wait until I can better lighting and background for this Red-shouldered Hawk. Any more suggestions are greatly appreciated. Arnold

Actually, as usual, I disagree with most here, I have the bad tendency to DL the 'originals' and compare.

First off the first picture is not the original, all EXIF have been lost, courtesy of lightroom.
Second and much more important, too many details are lost, even 'eaten' by the sky, among others:
Feathers next to the paws
Claws are way thinner than the originals
Branches have simply gone the way of the dodo, some for aesthetics reasons, other because the new sky is really starving
Then since the sky is famished (Like me, I did not have my breakfast yet) it ate part of the tail!!!

I do not know what was the white line across the tail but it is still there!!!

Now, how about posting the 'REAL' original so that we can compare w/o interference from any of your software?

Arnold, I would have to agree with English Wolf on most items. That said, to me the focus does not look completely sharp, could just be the small size posted here. As for the sky, when we view a bird positioned like this, against the sky, we see only the bird as our focal point - the sky is secondary. Your image with the blue sky and clouds have the clouds in focus and competing with the bird for our attention. Using a 500mm lens would not produce clouds that sharp in the background. If possible try using a blur filter on the sky image in photoshop before merging.

EarthArts, Thank you very much for your comments. What I learned from this exercise and feedback from most everybody who responded to request, is that I really need to do is learn more on how to be more artistic in my post processing when I'm trying to make major modifications to my photos. Arnold
