I didn't realize that so many cars required premium gasoline. That's a definite consideration when buying a new car. The Mini, Smart, and Fiat 500 all require the expensive stuff.

Yes, a definite consideration.
Our Lincoln runs Premium, as does the Vette and bikes (and my old PU). We are looking for a puddle jumper that doesn't.

My 2015 Honda Fit has averaged 44.6 MPG for about 2,500 miles - on regular.

That's something I look at. If I was buying a car and discovered it took premium, I would walk away.

You probably do mostly HWY mileage. You wouldn't get that around me

I used to live in East Rockaway, so I know Valley Stream. I drive for top mileage, but my son doesn't. Driving into Kingston, I'll get about 55 MPG, but coming home (lots up uphill driving), I'll get low 40s.

My son works in Kingston and doesn't do a thing to get better mileage. He has about 3,600 miles on his Fit and has averaged 40.7 MPG.

All those traffic lights and stop signs in Valley Stream will eat into your MPG. Idling get you Zero MPG.

Aint that the truth!

My Lincoln drops to 3 mpg on our road, granted that has a lot to do with how I drive. But even the Silverado gets better than that! :-)

The Lincoln tops out at 25mpg with my wife driving, slightly less with me :-D :-D
(but I get everywhere faster!)

A company from Central Ave has been working here on the Ashokan Reservoir for a couple of years. They seem to be doing mechanical work - pipes and gears. I can't remember the name, but it will come to me. They must be making $$ millions.

High performance cars with higher compression engines require higher octane to keep them from knocking. Knocking is bad. Premium fuels burn slightly slower to avoid the knocking. That is the only advantage of premium.

European fuels are refined to a much higher standard than U.S. fuels. 95 octane is regular high and premium's 97 octane
There is one fuel around (bio sourced, I believe) measured at 99 octane. Don't know why this is?

I do know that in older engines a premium fuel could sometimes get rid of 'pinking' but I've not heard an engine 'pinking' since the Japanese taught us about Q.C.

I always use premium in all my Ferrari's, Maserati's, Maybach's, Mercedes-Benz's, Jaguar's, Rolls-Royce's, and of course my Porsche's. I had every one of their windshields replaced with Nikon Nikkor and ground to my eyeglass specification so I don't have to wear glasses while driving. The German cars have Schneider Kreuznach glass for their windscreens and mirrors.
