An interview with DavidT,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I started photography about 40 years ago mainly shooting black-and-white film. Everything was manual in those days.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I've had no formal training, but I learned early from others how to load and develop B&W film as well as make prints.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
I'm still trying to figure that one out for myself. Perhaps, an unusual perspective, or an image that conveys a strong message, or just something personal that resonates with the viewer. Of course, a sharp image and proper exposure helps.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
I used a Canon 5D Mk III with a Canon 20mm lens (the widest I had, but still could have been wider). I shot at 0.8 seconds @ f/20 setting the camera on the 2nd floor balcony ledge.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I used Lightroom to bring out the shadows and tone down the highlights. I also used PSE to clone out some people.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
I actually shot this picture last year for UHH's Museum Day contest, but I submitted a picture of a different museum that didn't rate very well.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
I would use a wider angle lens.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
Be open to the many possibilities when shooting an image.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
Controlled lighting (flash or continuous).

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
Canon 90mm tilt-shift lens with a 25mm extension tube. It is a sharp and versatile lens for close-ups and portraits...manual focusing, though.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
Rarely, do I take any lighting with me, but I use a variety of flash and/or continuous (incandescent) lighting at home.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
yoga

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
too many

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
Not really.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Who am I to give advice? I just enjoy photography like everyone else.

An interview with isisthecat,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I started seriously working with images in 1948. In my twenties, with three children I mostly put down my cameras and did not work again for 40 years.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
Pratt Institute and University of New Mexico Most work involves people or architecture.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
This could be a thousand things. I would hazard to say that it must capture me immediately and then leave room for further stories.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
No special set ups, just long waits. Used a Nikon D800 with a 50mm f/1.4D AF lens.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
This was lightly manipulated to take out some background detail.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
My father was a commercial artist and photographer. He let me stay in his darkroom with him where magic things happened. The huge influences on how to see are George Platt Lines, Mapplethorpe and Mann Ray. I hate to place myself next to any of these except that they taught me a bit about seeing. They were geniuses!

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
Always.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
How to see.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
Monopod.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
Any 50mm or 85mm. They make you compose.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
Only a silver reflector.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Paint

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
TBARKERPHOTO.COM art one gallery, Scottsdale, AZ

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
If you shoot digital. treat it like large format film. Severely limit the number of shots and carefully consider exactly what you want from them.
