I have the Sigma 17/70 2.8 macro VR and it is superb. I took night shots with the lens wide open and they were tack sharp. It is my everyday walk around lens.

I try to avoid using all focus points for that very reason (someitmes I don't realize which point the camera picked). My latest batch was with only the central pocus point. Sigma is re-calibrating the lens so we'll see how that goes. Thanks for the suggestion.

Please let me know if they fix the problem. I will be sending in my 70/200 for calibration.
Thanks

Sigma is notorious for having focusing problems - I tried to buy a 120-300 new - but it front focused on D60 - sent it back. I have seen many more forums with this problem....

I shoot with a Sigma 18-250 zoom on a Nikon D-90 and have encountered a problem with it. The vast majority of the pictures are soft and appear to be focusing past the point I am aiming at. My other lenses (Nikon and Tamron) do not have this issue, so I don't think it is the camera. Has anyone else encountered focus issues with Sigma lenses?

I have the Tamron 18-270 new with the PZD motor for nikon. When I first received the lens it almost went back. Same problem you are having. Soft focus but only at the extreme ends. I was shooting with a tripod and I couldn't seem to get a sharp picture. I called support and was informed that when using a tripod to turn the VR off. I did and that corrected the soft focus. I really like this lens for a walk around. They also told me if that did not correct the problem to call back and they would give me the procedure to send the lens in for warranty repair. Can't ask for more than that.

That's very interesting as my D-90 reports the VR (OS for Sigma) is always on regardless of the swithc setting. They are supposed to look at that as well.

I gave a quick and dirty explanation of how to test this problem in the following thread:

Thanks for the link. I used a similar test for my lens. I found it at FocusTestChart.com (Tim Jackson). He has a PDF taht gives a good write up on AF and has an excellent chart at the end of the document. My lens showed definite back focus. Hopefully Sigma can correct it. I love the lens, but the soft focus/out of foucs pictures drive me crazy. We'll see.

Some high end DSLRs have a programmable adjustment to compensate for that and can store multiple lenses in its data.
