Despite their attractive appearance, the toxins they digest from milkweed that are present in Both butterflies and caterpillars
make them Toxic to most predators.

Monarch caterpillars eat only milkweed, concentrating the milkweed toxin in their skin, which has to be replaced every time they molt. The adult Monarch also has toxin in its skin. This toxin acts like natural Ipecac, causing birds to retch almost immediately after eating caterpillar or butterfly. Birds learn quite quickly to avoid brightly striped caterpillars and orange colored butterflies.

These are great!! One finally showed up on my orange cosmos yesterday evening and I happened to look out in time to see it. I dropped what I was doing and went for the camera. I was so tickled to see one but it didn't stay long and flew south when it left.
