Foliage Trip In Maine - any suggestions

My son and I will be leaving this Friday (Oct 3) for a 10 day fall foliage tour through Maine, starting from Brunswick and then heading west to Fryeburg, north through the Rangeley area, then to the Mt. Katahdin area and across the state to Mattawamkeag area and south to Mount Desert Island and back south to Brunswick via Belfast.

I would love to get as many suggestions as possible for places we should seek out for this photo shoot - things like scenic overlooks, water falls, attractions, country stores, beautiful Inns, and anything you feel would provide a great photo op.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions - we are excited about this opportunity to capture images of Maine at this fantastic time of the year here in Maine.

That part of Maine is pretty dry now so waterfalls won't be much of an option. Absolutely go to "Height of Land" on Route 17, which is a few miles south of Oquassuc (which is just west of Rangeley). There is a large pull-off at Height of Land and the view is incredible. It looks over all of Mooselookmeguntic Lake. A mile or so before you get to Height of Land from Oquossoc there is a smaller pull-off to the left where there is an overlook over most all of Rangeley Lake.
There is a maze of dirt roads north of Rt. 16 between Wilson's Mills and Rangeley that off nice views here and there of the great north woods. Watch out for moose!

I haven't been to Maine much so can't help on placed. But I do have one suggestion: Bring a good CP and remind yourself to rotate it for each shot.

Be prepared for traffic jams and thousands of tourists - they come to view the colors by car/plane/cruise liner... the roads will be packed - plan your trips in advance and leave early...

If you are going to be in Fryeberg, you should plan a day to do the Kancamagus Highway loop in the neighboring White Mountains in New Hampshire unless you have been there a few times. It is spectacular, and has many places to stop and get beautiful photos. There are short hikes to waterfalls and a number of old wooden covered bridges in the area. If it is a bright day, consider the Mt. Washington Cog Railroad trip. The route you are taking is very good for foliage - which is already turning quite a bit. When you get to Acadia (Mt. Desert Island) there are lots of places along the coast and short hikes to get good photos, as well as the drive up Cadillac Mountain. The whole Island is beautiful in the fall.

Steve,
Thanks for your suggestions - we are really excited about the potential for this trip - the colors should be great and our timing seems to be just about right - hoping we do not get heavy rains in the next few days - that could cause a lot of leaf drop - fingers are crossed. Your Kancamagus Highway suggestion is a good one, but, in our case the photos are for Down East Magazine, soooooo they really need to be Maine leaves :>). Thanks again for taking the time to offer suggestions.

All the best,
Stan

P.S. You may be interested in checking out downeast.com - Mark Fleming (my son) is the Visuals Editor for the Mag and there are some very nice photo spreads and videos on their site - check out The Light Keeper (Nubble Light) video - it is pretty cool and includes a drone produce arial video.

Make sure you visit Grafton Notch State Park southwest of the Rangeley Lake area and see (photograph) the waterfall. It should be spectacular if the fall colors are cooperating. It is one of the most picturesque waterfalls I've ever seen!
