Just wanted to know if a pistol grip ball head on a tripod has an advantage over just a regular ball head for those who use pistol grip. Thanks for your help!!

I have one but use it FAR less than I expected. Others will disagree: a lot depends on what subjects you shoot, and how you shoot them.

Cheers,

R.

I don't know that I could list the advantages or disadvantages, but I use one and like it a lot. It just seems much easier to pan and tilt smoothly with it. when I say "pan" I don't mean as though you are creating a panoramic series of shots to stitch together. You really need a panoramic head for that. I mean that it seems very easy to shift the cameras aim point around quickly without having to loosen and tighten levers or knobs.

For portrait work, I love it. This is the one I use:

I have a Markins Ball Head as well, but for the portrait work, the ability to just squeeze rather than twist a knob, is very handy.
The Markins head for more critical & landscape stuff is better, IMO.

I have the Manfrotto also and found it pretty good.

I use this model Manfrotto because it supports more weight that the other one shown. I love it and use it exclusively for all my tripod work.

I like mine because I can unlock the head and reposition it quickly with one hand. I have a Vanguard Tracker tripod, so I got their SB-100 lever ballhead.

Unfortunately, I bought their regular ballhead first, and I never use it now.

What's the point of that configuration?

Sorry - that's the GH-100 head.

I really enjoy the speed and use mine a lot. As stated above it does depend on what your shooting and where. I don't have any extremely long lenses which may be an issue, I don't know. If mine ever were to wear out or break I'd certainly buy another one.
