Large-leaved Aster

"Large-leaved Aster" or "Big Leaf Aster" Eurybia macrophylla grows in dense colonies in the woods. Although we think of it here as a typical north woods plant, it occurs from Hudson Bay down to Georgia, throughout the Maritimes and New England, and as far west as Missouri. The blossom is about an inch or less in diameter, but the broad leaves are 6 inches or more in length. They are often growing in large colonies, but each year only a few of the plants bloom - one in ten, or maybe even one in a hundred. It is one of the first asters to bloom. I found the late bloomer in the shot below the other day near the lake shore, where the bloom goes on a little later in the season than it does inland. The big leaves from this plant form a dense ground cover under the trees and in the fall create a riot of color on the forest floor. They should start turning in a few days here. The two shots I am posting are from a year ago.

What an impressive fall show, something we seldom have here except in patches. Beautiful image of the Aster.
