Mac's are boring. They just work and work. No excitement at all. It's hard to stay current with technology because they don't seem to wear out. Now I have a collection of 4 Mac's and they all work like the day I bought them. Really upsets me.

...and the bug fixes, constant updates and virus scans, they sure do wear on you. ;)

I always tell people - with Windows you spent all your time figuring out HOW to do something, with a Mac, you just spend your time thinking about WHAT you want to do ...then just do it.

Most professional sports photographers that I know use Macs because of the speed. I always have to work with tight deadlines, so speed is important to me. For example my macbook pro loads photoshop in two seconds, whereas my PC takes two minutes. If you get one, I would advise getting AppleCare with it, as MAcs are notoriously hard to service. I have had two power supplies fail on me, which were replaced by Apple under AppleCare.

That reminds me. I had my time machine have a problem with it. Apple Care sent out a new one, moved the files from the old one to the new one and after that was done, paid postage to return the old one. I kept getting pop ups that warned me of the problem.
Apple Care rocks.

True statement, Bozsik.
The only thing is.... You (I anyway) develop PS skills when I'm not on the phone with Iyogi Support (my PC support) for, sometimes hours ( I kept a book on when, and for how long, I was on the phone with them) as apposed to reading the UHH forum and enjoying photography, and watching Lynda videos on how to use PS.
I'm MUCH more productive with my MacBookPro. Just saying...

Anecdotal story. I have the same kind of story for Mac. Just saying... Like I said, if you are happy with your system, that is great. But if you are changing systems just because someone says they are for photographers, that is a mistake. You will also have to change some of the software as well. Not just the hardware end. It could double or more the price of the upgrade. They are both fine systems.

Urban Legends are great. Now I know how they are perpetuated. You are probably not comparing two computers with the equivalent hardware.

I thought all these 1998 stereotypes were long dead. Speaking of 1998, back then I was selling computers at OfficeMax. The manager of the computer department (a Mac guy) would always sell people on Macs by telling them that they were for new folks who didn't want to have to learn about computers, they just wanted to sit down and start using them. I'd forgotten about him saying that until I read this thread.

After you have research the various Mac model, go to the Apple website and look for their refurbs. The generally come with a short warrenty. Buying a used on eBay, Amazon, etc means no warranty and an uncertain condition. Bear in mind the difference between PowerPC Macs, now obsolete and unsupported by Apple, and Intel Macs. Get the newest Intel you can afford. Also be aware that not all non-Apple software is Intel compatible. The premiere photo software is Photoshop but getting into Adobe's monthly license lease will be pricey at least. Older PS software can be found on places like eBay, but usually there is no authorization data so that PS could be run only in demo mode. Be tough on what software you buy.

John, I buy refurbs from Apple and my Macbook Pros come with a full warranty. I buy Apple Care to extend it to three years.

FYI, all Apple Refurbs come with the same warranty as new, 1 year.... you can extend that with a purchase of Applecare....

I own several refurbed units, one IMAC and 3 Macbook AIRS - all perform and look flawless...

I would have said the same thing before last Sunday. My buddy had his wives iPad and was taking pictures of his son at the races.
Who'd ever thunk it.... Six years or less ago :?:
