D5000, what is auto bracket?

I know how bracketing works as I do a lot of hdr in Bulb/Remote mode.

Reading the manual, it has has "assign FN" and one of the options is auto bracketing (auto bracketing is set to AE in the controls menu).

I decided to give it a try, when I press the FN button, the shooting menu lights up.

I then take 3 shots but on replay, they all have the same EV.
Am I missing something?

Thanks for any and all explanations

It sounds like you have your camera set to change Exposure when you bracket (which is good) but you haven't set the exposure values to change by. Check the BKT mode in the bottom-right of your Information display - it is probably set to off. You need an exposure value in there for the auto bracketing to work.

Auto bracketing is set to let your camera take 3 consecutive shots, one properly exposed, one under exposed, and one over exposed. You can the combine them with HDR software. The amount of over/under exposure is set by you. The procedure is well explained in your manual.

Thats what confuses me.
If you have to set bracketing from the shooting menu, what purpose does assigning it to the FN button do?

The only thing the FN button will do is initiate the bracketing sequence. You still have to define the type and range of the bracketing exposures. When I set the FN button on my D5200 to auto bracket and then press the button it immediately highlights the BKT area on the Information Display where I then need to use the rotary dial to set the exposure value.

It appears as if the only thing setting the FN button to Auto Bracketing does for you is to allow you to activate the bracketing sequence with one or two less button presses.
