The December weather in Iceland is just a bit cooler than Swindon. Remember the gulf stream? It keeps Murmansk ice free all winter. I wouldn't be too concerned about freezing.

I went In Feb a couple of years ago. Camera, batteries and lens will be fine. It's not that cold but expect rain off and on and wind. In fact, it seemed windier in Feb than when I went in the summer. So expect normal winter type conditions.
Some places might be icy so you might want some slip on ice walkers.
I spend a lot of time in Iceland. Even though it is not bitter cold, standing around waiting for the light does get frigid especially waiting for the Aurora. I always carry chemical hand and toe warmers. They will help increase the length of your batteries and keep you warm.
Art Wolfe has a program shot in Iceland. If you could find it on Public TV it is worth looking at. In NEW England are WGBH has them on all the time.
