Astrophotography is something that I am obviously not expert in. The following are aesthetic abominations and they show the locations of some interesting objects. These were taken at my home in winter on a clear cold night. There is a lot of sodium vapor lights in town so the color is orange and I did not try to adjust white balance to compensate. Even with these disadvantages you can see the Milky Way.
Camera was a D700 with 14-24mm 2.8 lens wide open, ISO 6400 and 20 second exposure.
1) Shows Milky Way, Airplane, Pleiades, Andromeda Galaxy, and possibly M33. 12-3-12
2) Shows the Orion constellation with stars; Rigel, Belatrix, Betelgeuse, Saif, and the belt Alnitak, Alnilam and Mintaka. The sword with the nebula can be seen. 12-15-12
3) Shows where the comet ISON would have been on the left side of the stick. On the right is the crescent moon with Saturn above and Mercury below left. 12-1-13
I will duck and cover as the rotten tomatoes start coming in!
I like them all! the star colors came out well, especially in the second shot. I've graduated from telephoto to wide angle shots of the skies, and enjoy seeing what others are doing. Yours are great!
Beautiful... not abominations to me. (But I'm not skilled at astronomical photography.) Be thankful you live in such a place as to be able to view so many stars from your own backyard. City lights ruin my "at home" viewing! I love the first 2 shots the most. #1 most interesting to me but #2 most pleasing composition!
Gee thank you for the nice comments dimorris and sford. By the way, I like your avatar. Great macro shot ... do you know the type of spider?

No tomato's from me.
I have a hard time getting shots in Albuquerque since its a grey/white zone. Not as bad as LA because I can still see some of the stars but not the lovely Milky Way bridge.
I have to go way out of town for that.
I also like number 2 just because of the pinpoint focus.
Nice job.

Thank you John. She is a jumper and when I posted her picture, one of the macro group identified her as a Female in the Genus Phidippus, a jumping spider.
Oh my gosh!!.just beautiful!!!

No tomatoes from here, and I have plants coming along in the garden. ;)
Great shots.
They make filters for light pollution that you might consider.
