An interview with Double E,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
Been shooting about 4 years. After taking pelican pictures in Florida with an ancient point and shoot and seeing my dismayed reaction to the results, my wife got me a Canon T2i to celebrate my 8th sobriety birthday.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
Took a 2 hour course in getting to know your DSLR and the basics of photography. I am currently shooting about everything from macro to landscape. I find portrait to demanding as I can never quite seem to convince people that the picture is what they really look like.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
Composition seems to be the difference for me in getting a WOW factor for feedback. Getting an interesting DOF to go with the focal point.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
Used my T2i, MP-65E lens, and MT-24EX speed light. Nothing special in the setup - as I was looking around the flowers and saw a bit of movement. Handheld which was a challenge with this lens.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I use Lightroom 5 now, but only had the Canon Digital Photo Professional software when this was taken.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
I have been studying a lot of the multitude of online information related to basics like rule of thirds etc...seemed like there was a lot of landscape photos taken by people I am friends with and little in the way of macro - so I have been taken into that realm of studying the things that we routinely fail to even notice.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
Would like to have stacked some images of this shot if I had the processing capability back then - and if the subject would stay in position long enough.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
how to take better portrait shots -

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
The rail system I have to go with the speed light (mentioned above). This really allows for some interesting options.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
This is a tough one. I have found the versatility of the 24-105 (albeit an F4) to be my go to lens for captures of my grandsons.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
I have the 580 EXII and 480EXII which make a nice master slave off camera setup

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I enjoy woodworking.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
While at 3X looking at a bug and getting the 'just right' focus, having them decide to charge your direction will get your heart rate up.

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
Flicker - eebarels

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Keep shooting - keep getting inspiration from great forums like the UHH.

An interview with counselor1938,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I've been in photography seriously since 1974, when I bought my first SLR to take with me in my international work as a banker.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No formal training other than courses in art composition and Photoshop.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
A good picture always starts in your imagination. The camera is a tool to capture what you see in your mind. Post processing makes the picture fit what you had in your imagination. Understanding artful composition is the key difference between snapshots and good photographs.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
Since I'm retired and on fixed income, my equipment has to be budget-friendly: a Nikon D3200 with two lenses takes me out to 300mm; a Lumix FZ200 does beautiful videos and carries me out to 600mm at f2.8. Cameras, lenses, filters, remote triggers and external slave flashes all fit into a photo backpack. Two camera tripods and two flash tripods fit in a separate bag with folding reflectors. (I also have studio equipment if I need it)

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I do post processing in Photoshop Elements 12 or Lightroom (or simple stuff in Picasa). Videos are done in Adobe Premier 12. PP is usually done immediately after a shoot.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
My best advice came from a professional who taught me about lighting and another one who told me to take the course in art composition. The winning photo of my daughter's cat in my briefcase was what I call an "opportunity" shot. Three things were necessary: the cat and an empty briefcase, a camera and my ability to see a very funny situation.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
There was nothing that could be changed, even if I had wanted to.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I have been a management consultant for 40 years. Photography has always been a serious hobby. I'm now semi-retired and will have more time for my hobby.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
I have a weird sense of humor, so I look for humor in all of my photos. I have a good collection of such photos and will try to post them on Hedgehog from time to time.

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
I have a Flickr account with many of my photos. If anyone is interested I can provide the link.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
My advice? Study art composition. Don't think that a good camera makes you a good photographer. Never stop practicing.
