I think you're reading too much into it. This is only about the closing of one lab in South Africa. If there's sufficient demand for E6 processing, either another lab will open up to take its place, or a lab that does negative film processing will expand into E6 processing to fill the gap. Top flight photographers will find other sources to get their slide film processed. And the article's mention of South African photographers needing to import their film - there are many countries that don't have local factories producing film. The writer is making a bigger deal of it than it really is.
