The blossoms on this plant are less than a half an inch diameter and the flower heads have a distinctive pinkish color. The flowers are on long slender horizontal stalks, usually low to the ground.

"Calico Aster" Symphyotrichum lateriflorum

Taken yesterday. Canon 5DII, 180mm Macro lens, off camera flash, f16, 1/100th sec, ISO 100, monopod.

They look a lot better up close than they do from a distance. Those pink centers look "spent" at a casual glance and it is not the most attractive plant - stringy and scraggly looking.

Thanks for commenting.

Calico is a perfect name for these beauties. A lovely image, Mike.

The botanists are in the process of reclassifying the asters and renaming them. I think the common name "Calico aster" is frowned on now because it is used for different species in different parts of the country and that can lead to confusion, but I don't want to give it up! The Latin names are being changed as well, which is a real pain. Hard enough to learn then without having to un-learn them and start over.
