I know this subject was discussed ad naseum a while back, and I looked at most of posts in the archives; there were a lot of opinions--on the mat, on the front or back of the print, with a hard pencil, with an artist's pen, etc., but I still have a couple of questions seeing as I'm only looking to put my name on a small portion of my prints.
I am primarily an amateur photographer and photograph whatever appeals to me and make no concerted attempt to sell photos, but I occasionally show at my community's "all arts & craft" shows and occasionally at juried competitions.
I haven't been in the practice of marking my prints, and if a friend asks for a copy, I'm happy to print one for them. Recently it was suggested that I should mark any photos I show or give away so my question is how and where.
Since I will only be doing this occasionally, it seems as if the easiest & most permanent way would be to put my name (small font, 11? pt.) with a mildly contrasting color (gold? silver?) in the lower right corner of a blank layer in Photoshop Elements, save it, and just add the layer if I want to mark a particular print. If the lower right seems to be the wrong place for the particular print, just drag the name on the layer to a better spot.
Are there any protocol violations with this approach? Should the name be in block print or script ? First initial & last name? Is the date taken necessary or can/should that and the location be put on a label on the back.
Thanks. Any and all suggestions will be appreciated.
when I sign I use a pencil on matte paper and a Staedtler Pigment Liner Pen for Glossy, Luster and Metallic
I sign with the year and my signature
© "Year Taken" "Photographer's Name"
Or a graphic that includes the same.
Style, placement and size totally up to the individual photographer.

Mogul, Thanks for this link. I just watched the video; it will make things A LOT easier than what I was thinking of doing.
