Many thanks to Bmac, Dixiegirl, randave2001 and Bret.
I used chiaroscuro lighting, in other words, to reverse the brightness of the sides of the mask with the brightness of the background. :-)

I wasn't familiar with chiaroscuro lighting, looked it up and found it's also called Rembrandt lighting. It's a beautiful, dramatic effect. Was that technique used with your avatar photo?

Chiaroscuro means light / dark and my avatar does represent a type of chiaroscuro lighting. The lighting in The Mask photo creates a light side and dark side on the mask and a light side and a dark side on the background but it is reversed from the lighting on the mask. This link will help. :)
