First, I did use the whole search thing, and still never quite found what I was looking for. I am looking for a tripod that is about 6 ft tall (unextended) with 3 section legs. I need this to support my Sigma 50-500 and Canon 7d.

Any ideas?

6ft tall UNEXTENDED? What in gods name do you need it so tall without extending the legs? Extended would be like 8 or 9 ft high. What am I missing here?

I'm with you. I've purchased 4 tripods and 3 monopods in the last 18 months. I don't like any of them and to think I just didn't want to belly-up-to-the-bar. That's history for me.

I love my 190procx3...but it is a touch short, but not bad...it helps to have an acratech gps ball head that is quite tall.

I think the OP is wanting 6' without the center post extended. But if I'm misunderstanding and you are correct that they want 6' before extending the legs I think a fire dept ladder truck might be the best option. :D TNmike

6ft tall with the legs extended, but the center post not extended!

I guess I walked right into that one

David, you are not only prolific, you have bad GAS!!
I've only purchased 2 in the last 50 years.
I admit, I'd like to get two new ones, but the darned things a disappointingly adequate!

I have a heavy duty VELBON tripod that use since 1986. It is four feet tall but fully extended - including the internal column - it reaches 13 feet high. Using an weighted adapter arm I can reach as high a 16 feet. (Looks like a giraffe with an eating disorder)

All well and good but this beast is heavy and while it has spikes for outdoor use one would have to be a bit crazy to take it as an outdoor wild life tool.

I should mention that as the tripod head goes higher the more unstable it becomes, with the extension arm it is even more so. Result? When needed I use a steady ladder. (Use a grip tripod if you do not like height.)

I just bought a contractor tripod from Lowe's and put an aluminum plate on it I can adjust. To that I put an extendable head on one end and the entire idea is to have a super duty, widely adjustable, I-never-have-to-compromise-because-I-can-modify-the-hell-out-of-it, second tripod.
My other tripod is a wood and steel antique.
My new ton-o-fun-tri-clopes is headed towards Macro photography... maybe.

I only get GAS because I tend to under-purchase in the first place. My head started swimming with all the talk about the 150-600, Gitzo tripods and RRS ball heads. Plus a few other odds-and-ends. I'd like to buy a Canon to make you happy. lol

Really Right Stuff is awesome but calling them expensive is like calling ISIS severe. The midsize tripod with a BH-40 ball head is $1,280. Beautifully built and produced. That being said, I have in Induro carbon fiber tripod that cost $350 and the RRS BH-40 for $375, which while it was a considerable investment, does the job beautifully for less.

OBTW, I got the CF Induro after humping an aluminum SLIK on a 9 mile hike to a particular canyon. That thing got heavy.
