Had great weather over the weekend! A trip to the Pascagoula WMA on Sunday was a reward to myself for the yard work done (but nowhere near finished) on Saturday.

I have never seen a black grasshopper. How big is it? It looks huge in your image. The flower is a cardinal flower. It's one of my favorites.

Thanks, DOOK, for looking and for your kind comment. It was the first time I had ever seen a black grasshopper and it was HUGE. My research tells me it is flightless, jumps clumsily, eats voraciously, and emits a toxin that is fatal to most all birds and sickens small mammals.

Thanks for looking and commenting, Jane. I wish there had been something for scale to show how big this monster was; he was about 3" long and very robust. Thanks for the ID on the flower.

Thank you, Angela. Glad you enjoyed. This type of black grasshopper only lives in the southeast so it is unlikely that you will ever see him in your backyard. Not sure if there are other kinds of black ones or not.

Now why didn't I see that flower? :-D This is beautiful, Sherry. You did great on the red. Looks perfect to me. The grasshopper is a lubber, and that place seems to be full of them. These are wonderful shots, and I'm so glad you went back. Did you find Horseshoe Lake?

Thank you so much, Donna. We did find Horseshoe and that is where I found the lubber; the lily pads were on the opposite side of the road shortly before Luther Lake; and the flower was past Indian Creek almost to the loop at the end of the road. At that loop a tree was on fire, probably hit my lightning and smoldered for days before falling. The trunk of the tree still had about 30' standing, the rest had fallen, and all was smoking heavily. I thought someone should know before the whole swamp caught fire, so I called the only number listed on the map from the kiosk. Don't know if they cared, but I did my part. If the swamp burned down, it wasn't my fault. I LOVE this weather we're having! I hope it lasts 'til Spring!

Weather couldn't be better, and we're heading for the plant bog this week while it's nice and dry. That's a bit scary about the tree, Sherry. It could have been a disaster, and I'm glad you called. Quite a few homes in the area plus the shanties. Lets not forget those. LOL
