Elephants o fthe ocean.
Ano Nuevo bay elephant seals, I bet. I once fantasizes launching my windsurfer there and riding a roaring northwester down to Monterey, but I think you had a better idea. It is also very interesting to view the elephant seals in the nearby off shore waters. I love the memories your pic released.

This is not Ano Nuevo Frank, though they do have a rookery there as well. Piedras Blancas is farther South of Monterrey. I like it better for a couple of reasons. I do not have to pay 10-15 bucks to look at them. They also don't have a docent telling me to move on after 5 minutes because there is another tour. You are allowed about 30 minutes of viewing at Ano Nuevo.
The beach viewing area is open to the public. You can stay as long as you want. I spent one day there and part of the next morning. My wife went geocaching and sight seeing with my daughter at nearby Hearst Castle. We all had fun, and I didn't feel rushed to capture the many images I did. Much more relaxed shooting.
Best time for shooting Jan.- Feb. Males, females and pupping season. Dec. is a bit better if you just want the males fighting.
When I was working on my degree in biological photography, one of the professors I had, had performed the first research work on thermoregulatory data collecting on these beasts. At that time, it wasn't a tourist site. I was doing a study on the San Francisco Garter Snake (an endangered species) at that time for the same instructor. It sure was nice back in the day when there were far less people to control.
David, these are fantastic! The second shot really gave me a chuckle :-D
