Using Grey Paper Background with Gels

I recently purchased a grey paper background for studio portraits, and the salesman said that I could use color gels with the strobed to create various color backgrounds. If anyone have information and have used gels to change color of backgrounds please explain the procedure\technique.

Thank you for any suggestions.

I have a collection of gels in different colors and intensities for my Medallight strobes. Its the perfect way to change the color of your background quickly. Many I made myself with cross-stitch rings and colored plastic giftwrap from craft stores, it works great and you can change the depth of the color by increasing or decreasing the number of layers of the wrap. Works on solid OR patterned backdrops. One word of caution, don't use them with your model lights, they end up light my factory green gel.

Thank you MT Shooter. That is exactly what I wanted to know, and the additional information about using the rings is perfect. I believe I can get the rings from a sewing or craft store. You have answered my concerns.

Happy shooting,

Rodney

Some Dollor stores carry colored plastic dishes that you can use to flash through, for $1.00. I have seen a photographer take a black background an make it appear white with high power strobes.

You could use something like this sold at B&H Photo (Speedotron SPFH7
7" Gel Filter Holder) around 13.00 dollars each and just clip on when needed.
