What not to eat during a Cross-Country race. (nothing gross)

My son is a senior this year and runs on his high-school cross country team.
For those unfamiliar with the sport, you are lucky to see and photograph the participants more than a couple of times.
I managed to shoot in three locations on the course- I had to run a fair bit myself.
After the race he said he nearly swallowed a bug and was a bit embarrassed about spitting around so many spectators.
I thought nothing more about it until I started looking at the photos last night.
This has to be when it happened. (this series is pretty severely cropped from full-body shots so resolution is not the best)

I'm going to miss him like crazy next year when he goes to college.

(brag alert: he has earned his varsity letter every year since he was a freshman)

Excellent photos and very funny.

Too bad for cultural bias against eating insects. The protein and fats could have given him a little boost in the race.

Is he leading? Bugs in the face are one of the hazards of being in front. The guys behind him owe him a "thank you."
:lol::lol::lol::lol:
We sent two boys to college. It's one of the milestones of life. I wish him and you the best going forward. He looks like a solid winner from here!

Thanks,
He wasn't leading but finished with a medal in the top 20.

We have a strong bond going through scouts and have eaten a variety of bugs together.
I think mealworms are the best tasting...seriously!

When I was bike racing, I remember a variety of flavors....none of them good.

This series will definitely wind up in the end-of-season slide show.

He's the last to leave the nest.
His sister is in her first year of vet school.

Great photos! I have a strong feeling these are just of few of many yet to come. We've been through a lot of that with our son and his two daughters all going through college and doing the sports things.
You can both hold your heads high -- but tell him 'not while running with his mouth open.'

Yes, definitely one of those experiences that will become an indelible memory that will be looked back on with nostalgia and even humor, but didn't seem so great at the time.

The bug-spitting pictures are probably in the same category.

Nice sequence. A friend's son ran cross country in the summer and did cross country skiing (competitively) in the winter.

I wish we had enough snow here to XC ski.
My wife and I did a lot of it before kids.
We took them to Minnesota one winter and my son loved it.
He wanted to try skating next time.
I bet my skating skis would fit him- now we just need the snow...and a groomed course.

Great moments in sport history.

Congrats to him on his lettering. I wish him the best in college.

I just whisked off my firstborn to college this year. Both my sons run three seasons. Kudos to yours for earning their letter each year! My sophomore is running cc now and I love to shoot the sport. It takes some ingenuity to get good composition that isn't boring. I run back and forth while other parents stay at the start/finish line! Great series you have here.

Good ones, Newfie! Our son ran Cross Country, too, and now he's a Cheif Petty Officer in the Navy and he's still running! When his son was born he'd run pushing him in a special stroller! :)
